I watched this a lot as a kid. Cuarón crafts a lot of really beautiful images that on re-watch I recognized immediately.

Alfonso Cuarón's English language debut is a charming adaptation of Frances Hodgson Burnett's frequently adapted novel. Cuarón leans quite heavily into the story's fairy tale qualities setting it amongst deliberately artificial sets and introducing elements of magical realism. The film's only real misstep is a small bit of CGI that is awful looking even for 1995.

Certainly the ending is far too easy, and the pathology of the wicked headmistress is only hinted at. But there's a lot of delight to be had in the movie. As with Prisoner of Azkaban, Cuaron demonstrates a masterful sense of style and ability to craft a tale that's enjoyable for all. The set design and color palette is gorgeous, and young Matthews is endearing. I also enjoyed the Indian flights of fancy and the general spirit of the thing. Despite some missteps, a charming little picture.

I got made fun of for crying when the father goes missing. Kids are jerks, how was I supposed to know this would have a happy ending?

Beautiful story, although I was young when I watched it, it does a great job of setting moods, from hope to dispair in a matter of scenes. Great job by the lead too

A Little Princess is a sweet and surprisingly powerful, although somewhat boring film about love and perseverance during harsh times. The film does a good job of presenting friendship and most of the young actresses do incredible jobs. Pretty good!
