A Married Couple

A Married Couple

1969
Documentary
1h 37m
Culled from 70 hours of footage shot over 10 weeks -- noted cinematographer Richard Leiterman, another CBC Vancouver alumnus, was cameraman -- the film captures the troubled relationship of an upwardly mobile young couple. Former bohemians Billy and Antoinette, apparently uninhibited by the presence of King's film crew, squabble about everything: sex, money, the car, their son Bogart, even how to use a vacuum.

Like a documentary version of SCENES FROM A MARRIAGE, a stunning portrait of a couple falling to pieces. The usual questions arise about how much the participants are putting on a show for the camera (they'd have to have some exhibitionist qualities to even agree to this) but ultimately I feel that what we're getting is real, even if perhaps slightly heightened. Tiny disagreements become massive battles under the weight of resentment. A very intense, gripping film that drew me in completely.

This strong documentary offers a fascinating peek into a real life marriage, the loose structure (basically two people quarrelling for the entire running time) bringing remarkable authenticity but also making it draining to sit through. It is, however, worth it to do so. By the end you feel like you know the people very well and the trajectory of their relationship as well as the influence their traits have on the it couldn't have been written much better if it were fiction. Very interesting.

Worth it for the dude's at-home fashion alone.

A one-of-a-kind piece of "Direct Cinema" depicting the life of a bickering middle-class married couple with absolutely incredible transparency and candor. Definitely one of the most unique documentaries I've seen, and much better than "Warrendale".

I could see how they hate each other, but I didn't hate neither of them. I found a precious reflection in it. Also, the dog and the kid have marvelous comic timing.

Somewhat of a disappointment. It's not bad and certainly captures some interesting and personal moments, but this relationship is just so dysfunctional that I can't get invested in what's going on. I can see why King called it an "actuality drama" because the focus is really on the drama and kind of light on the documentary.
