A Modern Hero

G.W. Pabst's American debut is a good looking film with some good performances, but it packs an ungodly amount of plot into just over an hour resulting in a plot that jumps around clearly skipping huge sections of the book being adapted.

The great European director Georg Wilhelm Pabst's only Hollywood movie! And again he's not close to delivering what he could during the silent days when he was at the top of his game. A Modern Hero is a straight forward story about success and the inevitable total destruction. Might have been a tearjerker had it not been for the unbelievable wooden acting. Richard Barthelmess was a very hit and miss actor. And by this point he was missing a lot and Warner Bros released him from his contract.
