It's so well-executed that it is an absolute shame nothing happened. The style is so slick and impressive, but the story is so dull and in the end, you feel like you've gone nowhere. The acting however is wonderful, and I give all props to the cast. Bar some tense moments, A Most Violent Year is a movie that was meant to be tenser than it is; and for this it suffers.

It does nothing, but on purpose? I expected the title to be a trick but not to this degree. It's so ponderous and deliberate that the ending left me with a feeling of "that's it?" even if it didn't feel like anything was missing -- a complete story of blank pages, other than the actors. Oscar Isaac carries the entire move on his shoulders and Jessica Chastain carries some nice clothes on her titties.

For a crime drama about a man who for all his life never wanted to be a gangster, perhaps its greatest accomplishment is how incredibly tense it feels despite moving at such an easy, understated pace. Not to mention that in this violence-saturated movie industry, AMVY makes just the presence of guns feel truly threatening for the first time in a long time. Chandor has directed a great achievement here, but it also ends up so understated that it never reaches a truly satisfying climax.

A very unusual business thriller, halfway between crime and legal drama, primarily invested in the blind moral righteousness of its protagonist. In that sense, it's almost the anti-Godfather, but still, this is how an empire is built. Quietly hypnotic.

Whether the title is misleading is besides the point, it just didn't sit well with me. It's a well executed film with a great performance by Isaac. If you wanted the Goodfellas of real estate deals, this is for you I guess. In the end I just felt a little duped, and thought it would explore more of the crime in New York City.

J.C. Chandor continues to amaze me. He shows extremely high standard in his, now 3 feature films. Like its 2 predecessors, A Most Violent Year is very well-written and based on the simple idea to only use exactly what's needed with great timing in all the aspects of the film- very well-balanced pace and tension, and solid cinematography and camerawork. Topped with fine acting performances it makes 'A most Violent Year' a very fine piece. Looking forward to follow this director in the future.

Chandor's building one hell of a varied and impressive resume, this being his most mature effort yet. He definitely wears his influences on his sleeve; this is a subtle crime thriller as per the 70s, less concerned with bloodshed than the war for the protagonist's soul and Isaac's performance even bringing early Pacino to mind. It didn't necessarily bowl me over but definitely a quietly compelling piece of work.

Ah yes, yet another mafia period piece... But AMVY does stand out a bit, thanks to its small scope, slow but steady tempo, and great performances. It's essentially a "Rosencrantz & Guildenstern Are Dead" of the Godfather; the big families show up here and there, Chastain dreams of getting there, but Isaac and the other small fry just try to grab something of their own.

A Most Violent Year is a mostly successful film about an oil baron having to put his morals to the test during one of the most violent periods in the history of New York City. It's interesting, has a purpose, gives us a couple of great leading performances and is compelling cinema for most of its running time. It has a keen focus not on the city or on its violence, but on its protagonist, and it succeeds because he's interesting and performed wonderfully by Oscar Isaac.

Its a movie that has all the elements of something great, but then it just hangs there. Its as if Chandor is trying to give you the least amount of information possible in every scene. Thusly the audience has no information to chew on. Oscar Isaac and Jessica Chastain give knock out performances. Isaac is like a young Al Pacino. Chandor shows shades of Sidney Lumet but somehow the whole thing just ends up feeling slightly flat.

Has some truly excellent scenes (The crosscut between the man on the bridge and the sales pitch is particularly fantastic) and in fully embodying Al Pacino, Oscar Isaac brings a weird sort of revisionism to his tortured-gangster performance. The film moves at a deliberate pace and unusual rhythm, and though not quite as noteworthy as its ancestors, A Most Violent Year certainly harkens back to some of the great character studies of the 1970s.

Excellent score and tension up the wazoo. It is shot so well, oftentimes stunning, but the set up of several shots seems so staged it turns to artifice. It doesn't derail it, though, especially considering how well the bubbling stress underneath the surface is navigated with an almost clinical precision. Maybe it needs a little more naturalistic life breathed into it, but it's still really good as it is.

A simmering, graceful drama about self-delusion. Isaac's character thinks he's doing the right thing; it's only at the very end that he realizes what kind of man he truly is. It's awfully slow-moving, but that's only because the actions it's portraying are inevitable and the main character hasn't realized that yet. Haunting; the rare movie that germinates in your brain for days after it's over.

My boy Oscar Isaac has to fight everyone to keep his honesty and ideals when dealing with his company. Even his own wife, my girl Jessica Chastain. Just going down an illegal path would make everything much easier for him. But my boy Oscar keeps his integrity and stays the better man. My boy and my girl deliver great performances but the movie never fully picks up his pace to become something truly great and special. But it's a nice small drama with pretty good people at the helm.

It's a better "American Hustle". A film about the illusions of the American Dream & Values, but this is not the best part. It's incredibly tense from start to finish, Morales always carry a burden, litterally: a bag of money, a contract, a baseball's mace, a gun. Well, not always, often, but i think it's a part of the costruction of suspense. Stylish directing, with a gorgeous images composition, some good ideas in the few action scenes, and a love for the '70s classics in the heart.

A NYC crime drama inspired by similar films from Sydney Lumet, this film manages to tap into the slowly building tension around protagonist Morales, creating one of the better atmospheric dramas in recent memory. I also appreciated the portrayal of a man hellbent on doing his business honorably, while at the same time subtly suggesting that his definition of honorable is fundamentally influenced by achieving his goals. Thankfully, Chandor avoids telegraphing to us what we should think about him.

This film compares favourably with the very best crime dramas of the seventies. It's as technically accomplished as it is riveting - the sense of time and place is brilliantly realised - and it features an intelligent script by Chandor, who also directs with a seemingly effortless precision. Oscar Isaac gives one of the best performances of the year in what for me is the best American film of the year.

Don't expect much violence (there is some), nor a typical gangster flick. This is different focusing on Isaac's driven businessman and little else outside of that. Isaac is great in this and, despite my earlier caveat, reminded me of a young Pacino at times in his controlled performance. The whole film benefits and suffers from this control; it underplays successfully at times, but also feels a bit restrained at others. Genuinely tense in parts. Chandor is doing some fine work (see Margin Call).

The one thing that I kept being fascinated by while watching this was realizing that someone (or ones) actually really wanted to make this movie, tell this story, about... a rich businessman buying a loading platform on the riverside. The movie and Oscar Isaac both fail to make me care at all whether this happens or not. It's not bad, it's just uninteresting.

This is certainly a well-made movie, but I can't pretend I was always totally engaged in the story. There's nothing wrong with it - I just didn't find it interesting throughout. There are a few really great sequences, though. Oscar Isaac's good, as usual. The direction and cinematography are very nice, and after this and All is Lost, I think director J.C. Chandor is definitely someone to watch.

This is a very smart crime drama, spending some time in lingering on character stories, maybe not in the most obvious way, but still managing us to know what might be happening with all the different people involved in the events. It's beautifully shot, too, even if I wasn't a huge fan of the strong sepia tone dominating so many scenes. It feels like a popular thing showing us the 'past time' and it feels unnecessary. The 'most right' path is a whole thing of the angle we are viewing it from.

Handsomely made, something like a sedated Nightcrawler, with a dash of Godfather and There Will Be Blood, the direction of the Abel character and his business ethics are never clear-cut, making for a realistically rounded and contradictory character. This also features some rather uniquely made action/thriller set-pieces, along with nauseatingly nostalgic cinematography.

The screenplay is really quite interesting, but this movie never feels like it gets off the ground. Despite good acting and an interesting story, there isn't much adrenaline in the experience, and the movie feels much longer than it is. One decent chase scene picks things up for a bit, especially because I did get very invested in Oscar Isaac's character, but there just aren't a lot of payoffs for the audience. I wondered why this movie seemed to fall through the cracks, and now I know.

A slow-moving, "small" gangster film that is both interesting and boring. The running chase scenes (there are a number of them!) are well executed, and the film is beautifully shot. However, the film's slow narrative pace, which makes the violence feel more meaningful, also removes some of the tension. The film feels nihilistic as it treats morality as an outdated concept within a capitalist world.

JC Chandor is batting 1000. With an Ebert score coming off like a stoned Phillip Glass work, AMVY is controlled filmmaking, reflected in its male leads demeanour. Chastain has one of the stronger female characters I've seen recently. Through the first half of the film, you get this feeling she could call in the cavalry irregardless of Abel's wishes. Touch over dramatic ending for mine, but a classy offering nonetheless.

Pretty good exploration of hypocrisy, even if the last five minutes are a bit too contrived, intended no doubt as a way of trying to get the point across. Consensus seems to be that it is Lumetian but seemed more Mametian to this viewer, although with a bit less artifice. Good use of colour and the unusual score adds a sense of menace. Chandor seems promising. The film justifies its existence purely by provoking my discovery of the great Ray Bryant album, Alone with the Blues.

A Most Violent Year does something kind of novel compared to most crime thrillers: it doesn't bask in the improbable. The trailer for this movie was awful. This is not an 80s gangster period piece. Isaac is not a Michael Corleone carbon copy despite his slicked back mane and Chastain is not a put upon mobster wife who turns to wine and pills. This is about a man in the thick of those things trying to stay above water. JC Chandor doesn't make films that typical audiences are expecting, and that's partly why I liked this so much. It also happens to be deftly made and well written.

I've also seen Chandor's film "All is lost" and can only conclude that this film fits perfectly. It was also visualized beautifully with an unusual rendition, but painfully slow and boring. Brilliant performances serve as the foundation of timeless classics. Quality film from J.C Chandor which nails the look of early 80's New York without reveling in 80's style or hits. Everything is restrained and comparisons to Sidney Lumet films are appropriate. Another good role from Oscar Isaac who is quickly becoming one of the most interesting actors of his generation. My only real gripe is that the story is not that involving; I was admiring the film more than actually enjoying it. Still, there's a lot details to warrant a re-watch.

I was expecting more of a gangster action movie. Instead I got a slow, deliberate take on the American dream. Following the inner workings of a growing fuel business is the fascinating part, along with Isaac's composure as the pressure mounts. It is very well made, some scenes had me thinking "classic", while other scenes were poor. Some stilted dialogue, and some plot points stick out like a soar thumb. The movie is too on the nose, too simple in its dealings, and too telegraphed to be great.
