In a way, I feel sorry for the generation that's gonna grow up with this kind of bland "horror" that only relies on jump scares and is just insultingly inane. On the other hand, screw those young and carefree assholes.

(2016 Freddython #9:) Piece of shit. No redeeming characteristics, and far worse than being stupid, it commits the cardinal sin of being boring. Also, when did the council of movie elders get together and vote that B-grade slasher flicks would no longer include female nudity?

Even by the low standards of Platinum Dune, this is terrible - sleepwalking its way through randomly chosen scenes from the original, with absolutely no interest in its source material or ability to scare anyone older than 10. Though Haley was an inspired replacement as Krueger, the most menacing thing he gets to do, is making sparks with the knife-glove, while looking like a melted Barbie-doll.

Don't forget! Freddy was a pedophile. They slam this idea home to ensure that you don't get caught up in the awkward relationship that viewers had with the slasher films of the eighties. BUT...we all watch those movies to see teens get the axe. So, we WERE rooting for Freddy in some weird, sick way. Not this time. Remember, he's a pedophile. So, who are you left to root for? A 25 year old Rooney Mara playing a highschooler? Nope. Great mystery plotline though. Glad they found out it was Freddy.

There's just no excuse for this. Krueger is a shadow of his former, witty self in this horrible remake. It's a compilation of poorly executed attempts to recreate the best scenes from the original with a minimum of plot and no character development whatsoever. None of the suspense-chok cycles work and all they do is prevent the movie from going anywhere. How could they do this to one of the coolest movie monsters ever?

Haley is pretty good as the creepy-as-fuck pedo Freddy, and there's a couple of cool visual concepts and novel kills...but it's not scary at all, and it's not funny at all....it's just kinda there, and it's boring watching the two protagonists slowly and painfully piecing together Freddy's backstory since pretty much everyone in the theater already knew what the story was. Too many weak jump-scares, not enough Freddy cracking jokes.

While this remake/ reboot does some things well its major flaw is its re-imagining of Freddy himself. The original Freddy was so fascinating that the movie had a thousand sequels to show more of him, and this one is just boring. just a burned dude with knife hands: none of the humor, wackiness, and gross appeal of the original. Also every time this re-does a famous moment from the original they manage to make it look worse than it did over 20 years ago.

Horseshit. Dream sequence, exposition, dream sequence, exposition, dream, dream sequence, exposition, dream sequence, exposition, dream sequence, exposition, sequence, exposition JESUSCHRISTENOUGHALREADY. The original had, like, three real dream sequences. And guess what? They are all super memorable. The body bag. The creepy guy whispering Shakespeare. The goat! Freddy's stupid long arms! I would like to "reimagine" a world in which this did not exist. No fun. No fun. This is no fun at all.

The original had some camp charm so they decided to dumb it down even more by going for an extreme version with jump scares every 5 minutes accompanied with loud screeching sound effects, cheesy gore, and doe-eyed breakout wannabe stars flopping around on beds trying to remember what they learned in method acting 101. One of the characters goes to jail half an hour in and then we're left to endure long emo scenes involving concerned adults, web browsing, and poorly acted moments of tension.

Well, at least it wasn't as bad as Friday the 13th remake. I love Jackie Earle Haley. He's a brilliant actor but poor diologues definitely wasted his talent. Freddy's sense of humour and sarcasm was killed here successfully. It's the only thing writers achieved actually. At least director of photography tried to do his best, but it's far far away from the surreality and originality of original's killing scenes.

Surprisingly not terrible. It's almost halfway decent. Jackie Earle Haley brings a lot of darkness to the role. Some of the production design and cinematography are memorable and the editing during the pharmacy is fan-fucking-tastic. The pacing also seems to improve as the story progresses, rather than deteriorate. That being said, character development and attachment is practically non-existent, the dialogue was cheesy, and having Freddy crazily appear behind the victim got old really fast.

Slick photography, JEH was alright, but there's lots of redundant dialogue and it lacks anything as spectacular and surreal as Johnny Depp getting eaten by his bed in the original. I saw a bigass meteor on the way home from the theater, that was pretty cool.

Even Jackie Earle Haley, who served up the only decent performance, could not save this; his role stilted by some very poor dialogue. The quality of the acting on show elsewhere was subpar. Perhaps the original Nightmare on Elm Street looks a bit dated now; at the time it was released, however, it was a pretty fresh and enjoyable entry in the slasher canon. This remake brings nothing new to the party, lacking the charm and, crucially, the scares of the original. Boring.

Yeah not even Haley can be excused, low-key growling Freddy doesn't work. We're constantly plunged into dreamworlds (the original was what, ten minutes max?), none of which are interesting. Too attached to the Elm Street brand with all the callbacks to do its own thing, and overly reliant on what made most of the previous sequels terrible: exploring Freddy's backstory. No one cares.

"We got six more minutes to play." And at this point we've still got about 45 min. more to endure. And don't get me wrong: This remake is an endurance test. Haley shows glimpses of promise (primarily in the flashbacks), but is utterly wasted, as we're tasked with feigning interest in The Cast From Glee Minus The Kid In The Wheelchair And The Token Non-White Guys and Girls, as they are ripped apart in predictable, non-scary ways. Docked further points for wasting Clancy Brown.

There's a lot of reasons why this is bad (those digital effects -- yeesh!), but the decision to make Freddy an actual child molester is still confounding. Sure, it is incredibly scary in reality, but do we really need it in our slashers? Would Friday the 13th have been enhanced if you found out that Jason was a war criminal?

Better seen as a supernatural drama than a horror film. Fans of Freddy will (rightfully) rave about the misuse of Haley's talent and Freddy's sadistic potential. He doesn't do a whole lot. An underdeveloped 'did he or didn't he' twist should've been further explored, but the director of 'Green Day' videos has no flair for horror, drama or potential. Mara, however, partly redeems the show, with another strong display of frailty and inner torment. Yes, the rating is influenced by my crush on her.

I can't find anything positive to say about this at all. Clearly, this was made solely to cash in on the Elm Street franchise recognition. This doesn't improve on the original in any area, the acting is pathetic, and there isn't a single character that the movie develops well enough to make the viewer care about them.

I don’t think I truly hate this. JEH is a interesting Freddy choice, and I think he is the most consistent part of this film. However, it doesn’t do anything to earn it’s existence. A lot of this film is callbacks to the original, with very little ability to step outside it’s box. It left most of the film’s horror pale in comparison of the movies 25 years before, especially with a huge importance on iffy CGI this go around. It truly just exists to me, and nothing more really.

It gets a bit better in the second half but still quite a bad unscary, quite predictable and boring "horror" movie. If your horror definition is ONLY and ONLY loud sound effects, quite horrifying. Worthless cash-in remake. The original isn't without its faults, but has a lot going for it - imaginative and gruesome deaths, an underlying message about children paying for the sins of their parents. and a genuinely iconic horror character. None of that is present here. The scares are limited to loud noise jumpscares, the deaths are insipid versions of the originals, there's no satire or deeper message, and Freddy has lost all his menace and sadistic humour.

While Haley is a quality actor, he's completely wasted here. They take all of the Robert Englund Freddy's charm and cheesiness away, and replace it with a legit pedophile who says all of his lines with 100% seriousness. It doesn't come off as creepy because Haley's makeup looks so fucking stupid, and the movie is predictable in the worst kind of paint by numbers way. Damn near worthless.

Taken by itself, the film's okay. Decent visuals, not too gorey, like most horror films you see these days. But not scary either. And not ridiculous enough to be funny. As a remake, it completely ruined the original story. Bad dialogue, no building up the tension, missed the whole point of the dream sequences; feels like they've sewn a bunch of scenes together in a hurry. It didn't work.

I had hopes that this wouldn't be as near as bad as the F13 remake. Turns out I was wrong. Again. Jackie Earle Haley steals the show as the titular horror icon, while Mara and the rest of the cast desperately struggles to match his performance. Well shot and Rooney Mara played her role quite well. But that's about it, you didn't actually care who lived or died. I believe they could have played with the idea of 'staying awake'. There are all sorts of things they could have down with that. Every second of a horror doesn't have to be doom and gloom. If we actually saw the characters have some fun or connect in anyway, it would have made the 'scary' parts more thrilling.

Freddy Krueger is a famous face in the genre of horror. His name is one of the most recognizable names in all of film history. Yet the horror genre is often full of cliches and people claim they will not watch a new horror with the same old characters and yet here we stand with the possibility of a new nightmare franchise in the works. And we arent rolling our eyes with disgust we are embracing this new series. I cannot tell anyone why that is but people are happy about this "re-envisioning"

When this remake was announced, I immediately deemed it unnecessary and now that I've seen it, I still think the same. I was actually surprised how much it differed from the original film. None of the changes really made it any better though. They certainly tried to make it scarier and edgier, but it didn't work. It was just one cheap scare after another and I was bored. And seriously, I like Jackie Earle Haley enough as an actor, but there is only one Freddy Krueger and it's Robert Englund.

It's tough to support A Nightmare on Elm Street. It doesn't justify its existence by doing anything new. It's not scarier, more intelligent, or even that different from the original. It plays out like a competent impersonation, but nothing more. Sure, it might get you to jump a few times, but for a film that already watched slasher remakes come and go with little critical (but a lot of financial) success, it should have been much better, especially as a remake of a horror classic.

Possibly the worst movie I've ever seen in theaters. I'm not even a hardcore fan of the original franchise, and even I could feel sorry for them. A nice horror franchise rebooted as a predictable jumpscare fest about a pedophile. Uh, what? To give you an idea, I'm pretty positive there was a scene in which nothing was happening and the screen just went black with the screaming, spazzing head of "Freddy" in the middle of the screen as a jumpscare. Literally like in the internet's screamers!

Enjoyable retool/reboot is no better or worse than any of the myriad sequels of the original series, and is quite well mounted and executed, with better production values and cast than you would expect; Haley makes for a gleefuly sinister Krueger, even bringing some sad pathos to the role, and the teenagers are a better bunch than usual (especially bona fide star Mara). While the Evil Dead remake was still a good movie despite its superior predecessors, this monstrosity was not. While Jackie Earle Haley was a great Kreuger choice, and made Kreuger scary again, he also looked terrible. Not only this, but following cardboard cutouts as protagonists is never a smart idea. Haley portrays Freddy as a LEGITIMATELY angry and vengeful spirit and not just the boogeyman, which is far and away absolutely WORTH watching. My main problem, without giving too much away: This movie seems to lean toward a different origin for Freddy, that would have made the movie a perfect stand alone piece, but in making this twist a red herring and playing to the lowest common denominator, the momentum died and the film is weaker than it could have been.

One of the ugliest looking movies I’ve ever seen (in a bad way). Everything is just grey. Freddy’s face looks like one of those Sphynx cats. In attempt to show how this reboot was going to be “serious” they sucked everything that made the original series special. I’m not saying he has to crackin wise, but even when the original was more on the serious side it understood the gimmick was something that had to be done with its tongue placed in its cheek. This one, if any classic horror movie, deserves to be remade more than almost any. The problem is the execution, it's not that I don't like Haley, the problem is that Englund has such a foothold on Krueger that no one could ever pull it off, and that doesn't even mention the character that he puts into it. Without Englund I see this franchise going no further. Unless they get a REALLY REALLY good replacement.

Haley makes Freddy an angry, scary villain again after numerous Nightmare sequels turned Freddy into a prankster. Sadly Haley is one of the few bright spots in a otherwise dull re-imagining. The film attempts to carve out it's own path by making Freddy a child molester rather than killer and introduces the interesting idea that Freddy might actually have been innocent. Unfortunately the film doesn't follow through on the potential of these ideas to focus on badly copying scares from the orginal.

And initially I had no intentions of watching this remake. But somehow it's not the complete disaster I had anticipated. In revamping this movie, I think they took on a few challenges and as a result lost the soul of the original. By that I mean, they were able to update the special effects and make Freddy Krueger more horrifying-looking. I think they also tried to make it darker and, on a whole, more traditionally scary. In doing so, they eliminated what drew people to the original franchise in the first place. The cheesiness and the twisted sense of humor is what made the Nightmare series iconic.

A lot better than I expected. There are some good kills, and a few very funny moments. I was also grateful that this didn't devolve into another miserable hour and a half of naked women crawling around while getting stabbed like the Halloween remake. Horrible and only redeemed by Jackie Earle Haley's earnest performance as Freddy. All the good stuff in the movie was done better in the original, and all the original stuff seems half baked at best.

Most of this is for Jackie Earle Haley, who had a couple of Kelly Leak look alike moments. Awesome performance on his part, but the rest was just not as good. I did like the original bedroom death scene that was shown and the final death scene, which was pretty good as well. Dark looking with a darker natured Freddy, this should have been hard to mess up, but most everyone involved did.

This might be the only movie that couldn't elicit a reaction from me either way. Nothing was good, nothing was bad. It was predictable and existed.
