This movie turned me vegan with concern over the pig's welfare - which the makers have none of, despite its prominent role. I think it's supposed to be a ha-ha funny comedy, but it has no humor to speak of. Many great British actors are present, but their talents are wasted.

If you like Alan Bennett this has it all... If you don't (or don't know him) this may seem too subtle or slow paced, but give it a chance. Really beautifully observed social commentry on the times with credible performances all round.

"A bit of a mess really, but redeemed by some fine performances."

A Private Function- living up to its namesake with quirky flair. The entire viewing experience seems to be exactly that, a segregation of the believable and the surreal, the two never allowed to co-exist. The characters are all (somehow) throughly believable, finely acted and generally complement each other in this "how many walking talking tropes can we fit on screen kind of way".Then, just for kicks, let's just place them all in this ridiculously exaggerated situation. A decent homage to Ealing.
