A Score to Settle

The writing of this was pretty pathetic. Relying on a ghost is never a good story device. The dying man wanting to even the score could have been good, but it wimped out badly, especially at the end. It was annoying to find out his son was just an apparition the whole time. Also, the interlude with the hooker wasn't as touching was they tried to make it out. Overall, this was barely watchable and nothing about it is memorable.

I've decided not to be one of the revisionist Cage lovers and, thus, I need to go back and watch his direct-to-video films. Here we go. This isn't bad. There is a twist that is bonkers and doesn't really have a major impact on the plot, but it is entertaining. Cage is solid, though his very stagger-y/foggy performance in the latter half is a bit tiresome.

Gotta love how sometimes these little DTV actioners just go everywhere. Nic Cage just delivers the goods here as this old, grumpy, sleepless, ex-enforcer recently released from prison and about to even the score on those who sent him there -- but vengeance might just a bloody fucking numbness 24/7 while you wander with money, an escort you fall in love with -- because she remembers your dead wife -- and your junkie spectral only son. There is simply no redemption. Wished first half was better.

The movie's twist just didn't have the impact the filmmakers wanted, but I enjoyed watching Cage's character seek revenge on those who wronged him.

The script is different, it is not your typical revenge movie. But there are several issues with the script, a lot of scenes unfortunately drag on. Cage is good in the lead role but the supporting actors are not given much to do here. Overall this film is disappointing.
