Very good, though occasionally preachy in the same way In the Heat of the Night was. Excellent acting all around, though. This film found places for a lot of good character actors.

A very good murder mystery The storytelling is done mostly in flashbacks which I'm usually not a fan of but it's done well It deals with racism not just black and white racism but black on black racism as well (Which is something you don't normally see on film) A standout performance from Howard E. Rollins Jr. and a relatively unknown Denzel Washington and even in this small role showcases his commanding presence on film And a cast of future all star performers

Martin Ritt's direction never liberates this drama from the stage, but there is a lot of fine acting here. Rollins is ver good, and Caesar gives a truly remarkable performance.

A Soldier's Story is undeniably theatrical, which is no surprise as it was adapted from a play. Certain characters and monologues are indeed over the top for film but would undoubtedly work for the live stage. With that said the majority of the film is superb work. Of special note are Denzel Washington in an early role and David Alan Grier who I don't usually think of as holding his own in dramatic roles. Of course I don't think you can talk about this film without praise for Howard Rollins Jr.

@BRYANT PARK, NYC

A great example of how to inject life into WWII period pieces and stage-to-screen adaptations. Terrific performances all around, with Adolph Caesar as the deserving focal point - his formidable presence drives the movie even though he appears solely in flashbacks. His third act monologue remains piercing and perfect.
