Prof. Joseph Elsner guides his protégé Frydryk Chopin through his formative years to early adulthood in Poland. At a recital in a duke's home Chopin insults the new Russian-installed governor, and must flee the country. The professor takes him to Paris, where he eventually comes under the wing and influence of novelist George Sand and rises to prominence in the music world, to the exclusion of his old friends and patriotic feelings towards Poland. Entertaining, campy, and visually sumptuous movie about Chopin's life, the plot of which bears almost no resemblance to the events of Chopin's life. The death scene, with Liszt in attendance (!) is particularly amusing.

Polished biographical picture of composer Chopin, hooking up with biopic specialist Paul Muni as the mentor for Cornel Wilde, who had quite a break-through year in 1945. Music speaks for itself, being classic. Shot with a fine color mood. And Merle Oberon was... interesting. However, the films drags and feels a little aimless considering they're telling the story of a great man's life. So while it's a prestige picture, it feels a little like a wasted opportunity in the end.
