From pagan re-enactors to failed communes, black metal festivals to Arctic hermits, and the forever Golden Hour to the Northern Lights, A SPELL TO WARD OFF THE DARKNESS is an inquiry into the possibilities of a spiritual existence within an increasingly secular Western culture. A participatory ethnography in the best possible sense, A SPELL choreographs the actions of non-actors within existing Scandinavian landscapes in an effort to arrive at a hybrid document of the past, present, and future. Three episodes in the life of an unnamed man (Robert AA Lowe): first, he lives in a commune in Estonia, then, alone in the Finnish wilderness, and finally he performs in a metal band in Norway. Gorgeous cinematography and striking sound design lull one into its rhythms at first...but as time passes and the film says little (but takes quite some time to do so), it grows rather tedious, and the protagonist's total enigmaticness doesn't make it any more engaging. Maybe I just wasn't in the mood.

20 minutes or so of searing black metal is probably the best possible way to end your boring-ass mumblecore movie about hippies in the woods. I kid, kind of. The first act's dialogues are realistic and just interesting enough not to ignore, the second is a captivating showcase of the Estonian forest and Lowe's considerable screen presence, and the musical finale is hypnotic and rejuvenating.
