I can't say I thought this needed to be remade, but as a first time director, I can respect the balls on Cooper for choosing this. He risked pissing off several different generations of fans of the previous versions. Truth be told, Cooper managed to craft a fittingly modernized version, here, while keeping the timeless aspects intact. Hell, I was even impressed by Lady Gaga.

Left the theatre shook. The fame monster is a hard thing to digest with its veil removed. Cooper does a wonderful job in really capturing the humanity of these characters in a rather superficial environment -- And... God its heartbreaking. Chappelle's quick monologue really hits hard after the film's conclusion.

Great soundtrack and Gaga is a very pleasant surprise - her acapella in some scenes is just unreal. I got a little bored towards the middle, the plot could've maybe been trimmed a little more but a nice, solid film overall.

When you strip away the surprisingly interesting music and the smooth directing by Cooper and Gagas presence (not her acting, btw) you are left with, well, a 2-dimensional female character, a romanization of alcoholism (I'm still ripped and I never say a bad word but look how I'M suffering), a terrible idea of creativity (pop: bad!, acoustic guitar: AUTHENTIC!!!) and a lot of stereotypes. From drunken fathers to stupid bosses and evil managers. Of course, people and the academy eat this up.

I have a hard time rating this. On one end I thought a lot of the plot felt like filler and a bit meandering, but the drama when it was there was engaging. I liked that they didn't overblow alcoholism or spousal spats, but I also thought it didn't do as much with the concept of celebrity as I'd like. You honestly could have made these characters lawyers and it wouldn't change the plot much. It's a decent enough watch but I get the sense that it could have been much better than it is.

This is just an all around good film. Cooper is actually a great musician, and he truly understands how to work the camera around dramas. This was an excellent directorial debut for him. I was also surprised to see Lady Gaga act well. I haven't seen any of the originals, so maybe my review doesn't speak to those who have. Still, great musical performances as well as acting. It's a sad, honest, and raw look into what it's like to be an aging alcoholic singer too. Great film.

The utmost respect for Cooper as an actor and director. Two mediums combined are something that I find extremely powerful in story telling, and this one is heart-rending. As recognizable as this path may be, it's without a doubt an emotional journey.

a great argument for why actors can make great directors. an empathetic film that's bolstered by an uncommon level of sincerity in a modern romance drama. the casting of Gaga makes what would otherwise be a fairly generic plotline entirely fascinating on a metatextual level. there is warranted criticism, but the strengths outweigh the faults. then again, I can't say I have a desire to rewatch it any time soon, or ever.

The movie starts with faultless chemistry and energy, but as it shifts into the 2nd act, the movie starts getting sloppy: key relationships (Ally's father, Jack's best friend) and themes (the debate over artistic integrity) are abandoned to fulfill a retread of the plot of the originals. The ending feels much cheaper and more sudden as a result, as though it doesn't extend logically from these versions of the characters. Still, as a prestige remake of a Hollywood classic, it's sharply presented.

I really liked Lady Gaga when she was vulgar, and I bet in real life she was more vivacious and crazy than this sickeningly polished rise-to-fame saga would have you believe. It's like a The Voice package, complete with the inspirational speeches and tough luck testimonials that always peak in flamboyant versions of real genre music. So while Gaga is sedated into a nice girl and phony from the get-go, Cooper does a good impression of a sad, shitfaced grizzly stumbling into a dive bar.

The songs are great, but the "star is born" plot is so cheesy it feels like it was written by a 12-year old ("so he heard me sing my song and then invited me on his private jet and i toured with him and got a record deal and won a grammy...")-and same with the cliche "controlling manager" thread that isn't even committed to. Jackson's arc comes to a poignant end and is compelling when taken on its own, but not so much when the film keeps misogynistically glossing over it in favour of romance.

Loved the drag bar scenes. Great sound scenes. Loses its pace in the second half. That final cut to Cooper singing was amazing. Sam Elliott was underutilized. Lady Gaga is very talented, but I just didn't see her as a generic pop star---though I'd bet she had a great time writing a generic pop song and belting it out. Makes me appreciate her more since we would have missed out on her real life talent if she chose a different direction. Cooper's meandering was great. Better than the '54 version.

The first half is better than any half of any of its predecessors. Cooper and Gaga are a joy, crackling with chemistry and sincerity. Cooper adopts a Kristofferson-like look and sound, while Gaga is all kinds of humility and sweetness Streisand couldn’t approach (and possibly only Gaynor equaled). In their early scenes, absent the veneer of a pop show with all its choreography and costumes, we have an actress perhaps less skilled than her opposite but making up for it with utter vulnerability.

The first half is damn near a masterpiece. But the second half drags it all down with its pointless, self-destructive tragedy that Hollywood just can't seem to help making a few of every year--and this ties it all up in a bow by being a quadruple remake of the depressing title.

That was bafflingly excellent what the heck. Cooper is ACTING so damn hard but it mostly works and his direction is extremely subtle and effective, while Gaga is incredible. Not the best script and it never really breaks out of the whole mainstream Oscar bait thing, but it’s still far more thoughtful and heart-wrenching than anyone could have anticipated, especially from the directorial debut of fuckin Rocket Racoon

This really blew me away. Jackson and Ally are such exceptionally realized characters. Everything here feels so authentic, which was all the more important given that artistic authenticity is one of its themes. It feels like Lady Gaga's entire career was custom built to ready her for this script. Probably my favorite musical performances I've ever seen in a movie, as well. Just impressively made all around, and an astounding directorial debut for Cooper.

Cooper and Gaga are both good, but Elliott is the finest performer here. It’s clearly well made and has things in it to appreciate, but mainly (given the hype) I was simply surprised at how ordinary this felt. There’s nothing particularly special about Ally and Jacks relationship; if anything it felt superficial; frustratingly so given the run time. This failed to connect with me an any emotive level which is really what this film is aiming for. Disappointingly cliche.

Amazing soundtrack from Gaga and a good performance from Cooper, but (to some extent, I suspect, as a result of an at times wonky script) I wasn't nearly as invested in their romance as in the relationship between Jackson Maine and his brother. Elliot gives a powerful supporting performance, and I also liked Clay and Chappelle's contributions. But now I should probably go hear "Shallow" on repeat for a while until my brain understands that I really ought to stop humming it all the freaking time.

The first 40 minutes or so culminating in Shallows is absolutely terrific. The movie continued to have me emotionally hooked almost all the way through. Unfortunately, someone takes a sledgehammer to the script in the third act and a movie that has operated on the fringes of sentimentality comes crashing down into Schmaltzville. Lady Gaga is great, but I was more moved by Elliott and especially Cooper. A promising directorial debut but Libatique is essential to this working as well as it does.

Whatever occasional power there is in Bradley Cooper's slurring performance and the emotional musical numbers is lost in the unaddressed manipulative misogyny of the central relationship, which is a poor focus for an already aimless, pretentious film. Didn't do a lot for me, despite having elements I enjoy. Part of the problem is that I've seen basically all of this in films before. And long before this film, I'd decided I don't really like Cooper or Gaga, so it was kinda doomed for me from the get-go. I didn't like their characters or their performances, so the emotional stuff didn't work. I really enjoyed when Elliott was on screen - he acted circles around Cooper. I did think Cooper did a pretty good job with directing though.

A Star Is Born is an impressive directorial debut from the surprisingly multitalented Bradley Cooper. He excels behind the camera and he is convincing in both a career defining dramatic role and as a musician. Lady Gaga is a revelation also and vocally she is incredible. Whilst a special mention must go to an under utilised Sam Elliott and his scenes with Bradley Cooper are incredibly moving. The songs and instantly memorable and there is a rawness and reality to this film that I connected to.

This has shortcomings: Cooper and Gaga's chemistry gets backburnered halfway through the film and the climax feels a little stilted as a result. I would've liked to see the focus on their relationship remain on their interactions rather than their distance. That said, this is by far Cooper's best performance. Gaga is usually great, a couple times unnatural. The songs are just lovely. And the overall production is well done.

"I'm all choked up, and I can't find the words." No set of lyrics in the ambitious, flawless, and rapturously entertaining "A Star is Born" could more accurately describe my feelings toward the film. As the tale reaches its emotional climax, one final ballad, we're left with a single shot of our titular star, tears welling in her eyes. Cut to black. "Directed by Bradley Cooper". Applause the likes of which I've never heard rang out in that moment. I'm proud to have been a part of it that night.

In the first live performance of "Shallow," there's only a series of close-ups of Cooper and Gaga. There's a crowd out there, somewhere, but it's the connection being formed on-stage which gets the spotlight. It's the rare concert scene to feel intimate. What a shame that the film then devolves into exploring the cliches of the tortured musician, indulgent self-flagellation, and the struggle between popstar success and authentic artistry. And this film sets the bar for authenticity rather low.

The fact that this is the "film of the year" speaks volumes to the vapidness of our culture. To be fair, I didn't think I'd like this film as I don't care for either co-star. Sure enough, I hated it. This film is contrived, cliche AF, unwatchably misogynistic, absurd, tacky, dry and utilizes all the usual tropes. Cooper is a shit writer and actor. I hear this is a romantic, tearjerker of a film?! It's irritating how talented Cooper is. He puts some real love into his direction and tells a coherent and important story. At the same time, he gives a flawless, unbelievably good performance, with a willingness to be, for the first time in his career, ugly. Everyone else does a great job, too, but Cooper really blew me away. It's nice to see a performance where a celebrity actually vanishes into the role.

Bound to be the most hyperbolically beloved movie of the year. The details are strong - the drag bar, Gaga’s father and his buds. First half hour is shallow fun - the building of sexual tension. Gaga gives her most authentic performance when she’s singing or confused. I found Cooper to be painful to watch - a gravel-voiced parody of every drug addicted musician. For a movie that repetitively preaches “have something to say,” it sure does say a bunch of nothing. An unaffecting slog.

The trajectory is kinda inevitably Oscar baity as it always is with these kinds of films, but damn I didn't expect this to look as good as it did. Cooper pulls his weight and Matthew Libatique's lighting is stunning in places. If I may digress a bit musically I'm glad the songwriting here continues Gaga's embracing of whiteness in an increasingly diverse pop landscape. A polished dusting off for this venerable work-horse melodrama; outstanding for the first hour, with Cooper and Gaga's performances achieving genuine and enthralling alchemy; these performances come at just the right time and place in the actors' respective careers. This is overblown by people but it's still a great movie. While the plot itself is pretty basic and could probably have been trimmed a tad, this is about the music and the performances. The only songs that don't hit are the stupid pop ones, ironically, because Gaga has done better on her records, but the rest are fantastic. In a sense, it would be nice to freely be able to criticize the lacking script, the half-involved storyline, and the romance that puts Romeo & Juliet's timeline to shame; seriously, they were dating like two months and then they're married. But the emotional impact of the film won't allow that. I was so into this. I came into this movie with a open mind. I get a little pretentious and the way the stay at home moms were praising this movie really made me feel like it was just going to be a okay movie. Boy was I wrong. The amount of detail in every shot really shows, the performance of the Gaga and Cooper is amazing. It is now one of my favorite movies and I can't wait to watch it again when it comes out. Very rewatchable

More like "A Star is Dying," right?

Would have felt a lot more at home in a late-60s setting, but they transfered that atmosphere nicely to the modern age with strong performances and music carrying the rest. It's a love story. The typical one from artists in the music biz. Sex, drugs and rock 'n' roll.... till death. Everything done as expected. No surprises there. But it feels authentic and it's all kinds of sweet.

The trick that's pulled off so well in this movie is how grounded the main characters seem, due to a solid script delivered in a naturalistic way by the leads. Cooper in particular is excellent, as is Sam Elliot. They do a great job of presenting as regular people trying to navigate their way through an unusual set of circumstances. It's competently directed too, with some really effective camerawork. So while the tale is a cliched one, this is surprisingly easy to get caught up in.

Honestly, it was a lot better than expected. But, a lot of it has to do with the environment in which you see it. Sure the story is a bit familiar, and in a way parts of the denouement feel a bit like a cop out. But it was still fun, and touching. Though in hindsight, I feel the middle was a bit underdeveloped. The whole generic pop-artists didn't fit at all with the character up until that scene. At least in my eyes. Best enjoyed somewhere with a great sound system.

It's a simple story but well told with great heart. Bradley Cooper has won me round and I even quite like Lady Gaga now.

The best scene of the year is possibly Sam Elliott backing his car out of a driveway. Remove the clichéd cynic manager and you have a masterpiece. And yes, some day Bradley Cooper will be one of the greatest directors in Hollywood.

He sings, plays, acts and directs - way to go Cooper. Incredible debut! Gaga lived up to the expectations people had prepared me with. It absolutely lived up to all the "fuss", and it's more than ok if a few Oscars are thrown in their direction. * Very Good

the best actress? dude no. i think there was nothing worth Oscar except for the song. cinematography was not terrible, it was alright. story was a cliche. drag bar detail has made me happy. the tub-fight scene was awesome, real. congrats cooper. and took unnecessarily long.

Started decent, and quickly got worse in the second half. Gaga was fine, but I really don't understand the hype over her performance. Bradley Cooper, on the other hand, was extremely convincing. I just wish this had gone in another direction.
