The first of two films pitting Sherlock Holmes against Jack the Ripper (the other being 1979's Murder by Decree). It's pretty low budget stuff, with some dodgy production values (think Hammer horror) but it has a good cast and the acting is pretty solid. John Neville is good as Holmes and I was disappointed to find out he only played the role this one time. The plotting is decent; a bit convoluted at times but the payoff at the end is satisfying enough.

Solid Sherlock Holmes vs. Jack the Ripper thriller which has the look and feel of Hammer studios gothic horrors - think of fog shrouded streets of Whitechapel. It was fun to see John Neville as Sherlock and the cast is filled with familiar British faces - including a young Judi Dench.
