A little torn on this one. There are some exquisite parts here, like the cinematography and the costuming. The pacing is a bit odd, due to the awkward voice-overs and flashbacks. The story almost felt like you had to read too much between the lines; intentionally or not, it seemed like someone with knowledge of the underlying book would get more out of this. If I liked slice-of-life films more, I'd undoubtedly give this top marks.

Cinematography is nearly on par with Barry Lyndon. It is that good. Amazing framing and compositions.

This may be considered the last great Pierre Bost-penned movie, although technically he didn't write it as a script but as a novel, adapted posthumously by Tavernier. It's an excellent sun-soaked period chamber drama with a wink to Jean Renoir, and a lot of (even mundane) detail which I always welcome. It has some editing issues such as VO narration and awkward fade-outs, but the photography is really good.

It reminds me a bit of "Wild Strawberries". And it's a real gem.
