A 1970s style romantic comedy. Steve is a philandering American businessman living in London, heavily inclined towards cheating his lovely wife Gloria. He meets divorced British fashion designer Vicki, and soon the two go on a secret holiday together in Spain. They rent a flat for their trysts -- and constant arguments -- in a seedy London building filled with prostitutes. A friend, Walter, tries to give Steve some good advice, but Steve won't listen until it's too late. (imdb)

Not that hot then, and looks worse with the years.

That this thin romantic comedy got a Best Picture nomination is a bit baffling, to be sure, but there are compensations to be found. George Segal and Glenda Jackson (who won an Oscar) are quite charming together, overcoming the surfeit of quips the script grants them. They're pretty much the whole show, except for Paul Sorvino as the requisite wacky/sage friend. The plot grows tiresome, but Segal and Jackson keep it afloat. Pleasant music and scenery--and some choice bits of farce--round it out.

This is a pretty decent comedy that nowadays seems to have been beamed in from another world where people make smart, literate comedies about actual adults and were okay with bittersweet endings.

This movie has extremely snappy, hilarious dialogue, and the performances really sell it. The only issue is its "boys will be boys" attitude about adultery. If the film had been a little more self-aware, it'd probably be a prominent classic, rather than a forgotten gem.
