While being groundbreaking 105 years ago, it hasn't been able to withstand the tests of time and has aged quite badly. While the basic special effects and scenery are very impressive the plotline, if you can call it one, is overly basic at best. Some of the humour still holds though and the film is infectiously charming. Due to the fact that the effects still pass today it is one to be remembered.

Moon men that explode when you hit and throw them? Awesome! A fun film that proved that film could deliver narratives just as well as other mediums, and that it could achieve things that mediums like theater can't.

Georges Méliès' transformative leap forward in early film history is a wonderfully, fantastical, escapist, piece of cinema that remains a technical marvel of its time, and surprisingly holds up as an entertaining watch. While a bit long, and far from perfect, the story of silly French wizards battling moon demons seems to be a tale as old as time, and certainly worth a watch by all fans of film.

It's funny in Jeunet&Caro way. You wouldn't expect so detailed a work this early in film history. This is some twisted imagination. Just push your shuttle to the edge of moon, you'll fall right back to earth with no trouble.

Considering the technology available and the work that went into creating this, it is a lasting masterpiece. Of course it can't be measured alongside big-budget modern films for comparison's sake, but it would be more apt to note that people with access to advanced tools now can barely muster this type of style and special effects in well-produced YouTube videos. The imagination and effort that Méliès put into this work is legend materialized and it still manages to bring smiles to audiences.

The first ever no-bullshit kick-ass sci-fi featurs a few pompous astronauts, perky yet gentle aliens, and 'The Moon' as a supporting character. Too bad the real moon isn't nearly as much fun as the one seen here...

This is a wonder and a national treasure. Put on your time-travelling hat and jump back 108 years; this one shouldn't be hard to find on the Internet and it is a must watch for every serious film nut. It kick-started the idea of sci-fi with such style and such visuals. Méliès was a genius ahead of his time and whenever I'm bored, I jump back and watch this or The Conjurer. It is amazing what could be done with film at this point in time. Put yourself in their shoes and be amazed and shocked.

A truly impressive piece of history. In terms of sci-fi, and ingenuity of the staging and effects, Méliès was a visionary. It's far from perfect, there's no real narrative and even by the standards of the day it must have seemed whimsical. But the sheer temerity to tackle something of this technical complexity during the earliest years of cinema is to be applauded.

Really pulls all the stops in terms of special effects, although being 1902, the narrative structure can't help but belie the immaturity of the medium. While this is categorized as science fiction, it's more like watching a dream than anything else, and for me that's what makes it so appealing.

I've started to realize how much I adore early films, mainly because of the simplicity involved. This little short is pure fun. It's ridiculous, but considering the time it was made it's also quite remarkable, full of hilarious sequences, crazy notions of space travel, and exploding moon aliens. Any movie buff should see this and anyone can still enjoy it.

It could get by on the fact that it was made in 1902 and has this kind of amazing art-design, but it takes a boring subject like travelling to the moon (though obviously not boring at the time) and makes it cool by fighting moon men who explode. It's actually just a solid short, regardless of age, though I wish I could have seen it in 1902 except for the fact if I had I'd be dead right now, thus robbing the world of this review.

The two main things that make motion pictures exhilarating and distinct from the theater are editing and camera movement. This film is so raw in both of these areas that it actually serves to highlight how vital they are for the medium. This short film features a static, silent, three minute long shot of people talking. The silliness and vitality of the second half has a slight redeeming quality, but yeah...meh.

Of course story is not that developed but if you notice a lot of science fiction films are based on it inc promethius, alien. For the time revolutionary in editing, sets, costume, effects well, everything really. The one bad thing I can say is that I don't really care for the alien conflict. They just feel like spawned enemies. But other than that a short spectacle that'll let you talk with any film scholar. Fine use of colour by the way. a fine film.

*I watched the version restored by Lobster Films, Groupama Gan Foundation for Cinema and Technicolor Foundation for Cinema Heritage* Completely fantastical and other worldly, but also strangely familiar. Méliès somehow manages to capture something of the spirit of Copernicus, Galileo, those who led the Space Race and the current day likes of Richard Branson and Elon Musk. It's a simultaneously disturbing and hopeful film.

"Le Voyage Dans La Lune" is an extraordinary creation, mainly because it was made back in 1902 - that is, more than a century ago and not even a decade since the first film showings by the Lumiere brothers. Unfortunately though, all the sci-fi (and not only) movies that followed make Melies's celebrated work a bit outdated.

Like any good theatrics performance Melies does an excellent job making the production look amateur, haphazard and lucky. But don't let that old act fool you. This is well designed, rehearsed and executed. The blocking is spot on with all the actors hitting their stage marks. The jump cuts and SFX are precise (remember they had to do multiple exposures on one negative in one take) with primitive equipment. An ambitious film that still manages to entertain and inspire 110 years later.

So much love, creativity, and passion for good old-fashioned filmmaking is packed into 15 minutes, and it's incredible. Although you have to give it a handicap for being an incredibly early piece of work, A Trip To The Moon gets by on it's stellar art design, and some impressive special effects (in context, of course), It's very silly - which helps the reading of the film being a criticism of the scientific community at the time - but it has brilliant sets and great gags. The film is very static though - and the lack of good editing makes it suffer in a modern context.
