A zori zdes tikhie

Very interesting quasi-feminist war film. There's a lot of food for thought in the contrasts between the war and pre-war lives and the conflicted feelings and ambitions of the various soldiers. Great performances and pretty strong cinematography too.

Oddly resembles THE DEER HUNTER in many ways, with a long, almost tedious build-up, establishing the pre-war identities of all the characters (in a bizarrely romanticised, almost “barracks comedy” sort of a way) before the much darker, bleaker and quite affecting second half kicks in, with a portrait of grubby, desperate, “on the ground” warfare, spotlighting Martynov’s brittle and stoic leading performance. The first half would benefit from a rewatch, knowing where the second half is going.
