Some dark comedy masterpiece. By the time it was over I ran out of pearls to clutch.

Get past the initial horror of this story and, boom, comedy gold mine. The mom had Heath Ledger Joker face. Jan is a GILF, Berchtold was just 45 years too early. Berchtold's brother is straight crazy too. "My brother was a pedo, but I'll be damned if he wasn't the best car salesman I ever saw. It was great." Its all just insane.

Aptly summarized by IMDb, it is legitimately stranger than fiction. A seriously bizarre story told by 4 completely insane people, the police investigators are the only ones keeping us on this planet.

This was not a great film, but the true story is so bizarre and horrifying that it works. It said a lot about the influence charismatic people can have, and even more so how naive and dumb small-town religious people can be. Definitely worth watching for the story and all its twist and turns. But yeah, not actually a great documentary - no real artistry or filmmaking going on. It's pretty basic, but entertaining nonetheless.

This is tough to rate. The story is a perfect 100. It's honestly just so goddamn crazy. It's hardly believable, except for the fact that nobody could make up people this insanely and sadly gullible. But I can't say that there's anything to the documentary other than just putting them in front of the camera and having them tell the story. But gotdamn it's compelling. And holy shit there are some laughs (that I should feel guilty about).

A bizarre true crime tale. Hard to watch because of the subject matter, but thankfully without feeling too exploitative. As a documentary, the structure didn't always work for me, and I often wished that the film had taken the time to delve deeper into the more outlandish story developments or personal motivations.

How do you rate this? Like its a great work convo as no-one will believe you that this terrible story is real. Everyone sucks and its a pretty typically made doco.

I just cant believe how these people acted and dont know how the brother of the perpetrator is not super culpable with his knowledge and being okay with what his brother did.

A pretty sad but straightforward story that would almost work as an instructional video on grooming were it not for the fact no other parent on the planet would be stupid enough to let this happen. Were bible belt Americans really this dumb? Even in the 70s? Or was their involvement much more sinister than is alluded to here? That's what keeps you thinking after the credits have rolled: Are this lot victims, or is this piece an attempt by a wholly colluding family to free themselves of guilt?

This should be the opener in Life 101. You may think you're not stupid enough to fall for this guy's crap, but I doubt it.

I think that this story goes deeper than what was mentioned, but that's just my opinion. It features one of the most disgusting bastards of all time and the most moronic parents ever. All parents should watch this.

Sad and weird. At the risk of sounding like a satanic panic histrionic suburbanite in the 80s watching this movie in the same era of Epstein makes me think there is a large ugly mostly invisible undertow of pedophiles out there but who knows

The fact that every viewer thinks that every person in this story is a complete moron is a fault of the documentary. It makes everyone look awful. They might be, but it doesn't allow the viewer to come to their own conclusions.

A sad, horrible story which is only engaging because of the subject matter. Otherwise it's pretty badly made and is basically cheap exploitation.
