Hilariously over-the-top. All the principals are controlling bullies or petulant brats, while the servants vainly try to keep everyone acting sensible. One of Bunuel's pet issues is passion that manifests itself as punishment, and that's the dominant theme here, particularly in the form of Alejandro (i.e., Heathcliff), who comes off like an utterly self-absorbed bastard. Best laugh-out-loud line: "this is no time for kissing". A minor work, perhaps, but quite fun for Bunuel fans.

Bunuel's Wuthering Heights is better than the Hollywood version. Somehow, all this passionate craziness sounds better when spoken in Spanish and set in Mexico.

The Mexican setting and Buñuel's direction fit perfectly into a largely faithful telling of Brontë's story. However, having just finished the book, the film leaves a strong feeling of incompleteness in regards to the story that's difficult to adapt. To be fair, Buñuel's effort is about as good as it could get.

The only version of Wuthering Heights that seems to understand just how broken Heathcliff and Catherine are. Heathcliff isn't romanticized.
