No flashy twist or wider allegory, just stupendous awesomeness. The truth is that few if any other directors of Farhadi's generation have reached such mastery of their craft. He needs no directorial bells or whistles; the cinematics are a perfectly paced, accurately shot and therefore transparent vessel for the ingenious writing and smashing delivery Farhadi coaxes from his large ensemble cast. The plot faintly echoes Antonioni's masterpiece L'Avventura, but I'll be damned if it isn't better.

asghar farhadi is quickly becoming my favourite persian director - not only does he capture iranian life and people perfectly, but he tells universal human stories that surpass boundaries set by set by cultural differences and political strife. his characters in this film are multi-faceted and real, and he skillfully nuances the plot to keep the audience guessing until the very last second. absolutely superb!

Farhardi will probably be remembered as one of the great directors of our time. His films always engage and leave room for thought. And, as per usual, the acting is excellent.

Some of the convolutions of the second half are just a little contrived, but it is clear that few if any filmmakers are as skilled as Farhadi at fashioning dramas about the complexity of responsibility and the consequences of evading it.

The film settles in most pointedly on the theme of honor and shame, but its greatest strength is in the complex and fascinating way that it arrives there. Farhadi skillfully introduces each of these people while almost nothing happens in the first half hour. But as the film goes on, it blossoms, bringing with it a variety of incidents and ideas that speak deeply to the way truth and falsehood impact our most significant relationships, as well as the consequences they have on societal standing.

This poster is fucking hilarious knowing what I now know about the movie. 2017 edit: The poster I was referring to looked like an Iranian DVD cover for Friends.

speaking of A SEPARATION, one thing that makes it special is that everyone's behaviour is realistic and understandable given the immediate context, yet every action drives more of a wedge between people and flushes the situation further down the toilet, comprehensively and mercilessly exposing the fallible nature of a system, a culture and a species. while ABOUT ELLY is similarly riveting farhadi fare, certain actions are a tad more inexplicable and contrived, which detracts from its impact.

Not as riveting as some of Farhadi's later films but he does tell a good yarn, and the ensemble acting is superb.

Not a fan of single location films usually (which this one is not entirely), nor of family drama, but this one makes both of them riveting. Great screenplay, and the camerawork ensures that it still feels like a movie, not like filmed theater.

Farhadi handles the chaos beautifully, and keeps the complex web of character interaction interesting and believable throughout. Sometimes it was hard to fully commit to the tension because it seemed like such a minor thing to get worked up about; I had to keep reminding myself that it's not so minor in a country like Iran. Though I think Farhadi comes as close in his direction as anybody could have, to making that inherently tense to me.

A few of the reveals and conflicts in the second half don't emerge as naturally as one would hope, but the main story arch is powerful nonetheless. It works as both an indictment of Iranian social norms and as an indictment of a more universal and intractable problem: Our need to be dishonest with one another, lest society judge us harshly.

9? Maig 2016 - Molt interessant, no lenta, personatges humans, situació realista sense dramatisme. L'escena del nen posava completament en tensió sense música ni efectismes.
Volia dir res concret, la pel·lícula? El final em deixava pensant en això, sense saber si aquesta situació volia il·lustrar alguna cosa més general.

A curious story told with breeziness and little anxiety over its own pacing, this film succeeds in setting up its array of different characters, reserving any conflict for later on. When the conflict does hit, it makes for quite a sudden mood change amongst the characters and although their accusations flail about insensitively, it does help strengthen the ensuing arguments that revolve around this very peculiar circumstance whilst remaining relatable.

A 2-hour drama where nothing really happens for the most part, except at one crucial point, is always going to be a hard sell. The minimalist setting allows the film to get straight to its strength, which is involving the audience in tragedy and the moral dilemmas that follow it. Although there are some poignant and thought-provoking moments, the rest of the time there are just too many hysterical actors calling names and going round in circles. A bit too theatrical and tiresome for me.

The characters of Darbareye Elly seems to be on a slow-motion 360º display; during the film, more and more layers are added to their personalities through their actions. And it's incredibly "believeful" how they can lie so much without having nothing to hide.

the movie has two half . in the first half they are happy , laughing together . but in the second half they are angry , scary and sad . I think the team of actors had made it through for creating this feelings . the dialogues help us in believing this feeling but I never liked this manner of ending in Farhadi's Films .
