Not the best introduction to Roy Andersson, hopefully SftSF is better.

"The first principle of thermodynamics says that everything is energy and that this cannot be destroyed. It's infinite. She can only turn from one form to another. So that means that you're energetic that I'm energetic, and that your energy and my energy can never disappear. They can just turn into something new. So, in theory, our energies can meet again in millions of years. And by then, you might be a potato... or a tomato." -"I'd rather be a tomato."

The main question I was curious about with this movie is why Andersson decided, after completing the trilogy, to then make another one which would be his “final” film. Would there be anything conclusive there? Turns out, not really. But it’s still a fantastic movie and it remains intensely impressive that Andersson explored the exact same themes in the exact same specific style four films in a row and yet they all feel essential and meaningful.

This feels like European, slightly melancholic collection of random life-haikus directed by slightly deranged and less fun version of Jim Jarmusch. Aesthetically quite unpleasant (why do half of actors look half-dead?) but there's a consistency in tone and perfect execution of every scene. This is my first Andersson film, I've got a feeling I should dig up some more. Overall this movie influenced my mood in odd way, melancholically amused. Wouldn't see again but would see for the first time.

Viewed December 14, 2021. I had a hard time gelling with Andersson's funereal aesthetics - the pallid gray faces, dull ornamentation, stock-still composition. Andersson's long shot style isn't about filling with the frame with detail, but rather surrounding his characters with emptiness and stagnation, which is an idea I like, but it feels like he doesn't go far enough with it, comedically or dramatically.

That's what usually happens when you pose as oh so philosophical or oh so existential: you're not. A bunch of past and present pale characters doing daily bits, like losing their faith or dancing or just sobbing at public transportation, in grey, generic scenarios. There's even a Hitler vignette lol.

Offbeat and scattered at first, but once you start to appreciate Andersson's very particular thematic linking and rhythms, the film does begin to click into place and become more rewarding, even if the ultimate point remains somewhat elusive. Whatever your feelings, it's a beautifully framed and composed film with some stunning and breathtaking scenes, and an array of performers precisely in tune with Andersson's droll bemusement.
