Something about what Losey does (or is it Pinter?) just works for me. Maybe because despite the theatrics, the characters still feel utterly human?

Imperfect but worthwhile commentary on upper class banalities with a dose of very dry British humour. The acting is very good, except for Sassard's one-note performance, and the visuals are interesting.

An absorbing, adult drama. No flash, but a lot of depth. And a superb Dirk Bogarde performance. Losey directs Pinter better than anybody, knowing instinctively how to handle the cryptic, brittle, and sometimes cruel dialogue until it becomes a revelation.

A middle aged Oxford professor (a part Dirk Bogarde seems born to play) falls in love with a younger student, while his favorite pupil and a rival teacher are also fighting for her attention in this movie written by Harold Pinter. All this comes to its climax during a fabulous drunk dinner party at his house, with one of the best depictions of people having that kind of hot summer day laziness drunkenness I've seen on the screen.

Oldukça ağır tempolu. Pinter ile Losey’in üç iş birliğinden ikincisi ama bir The Servant değil.

Too slow to my taste even though the general mood is somewhat attractive, and Bogarde plays his role really well.

A movie as coy as the female character at its center, and surrendering considerably less, but it still manages to leave the impression of a good psychological drama.

Joseph Losey and his scenarist, Harold Pinter, use sexual desperation amid the beauty of Oxford in summertime to make our flesh crawl. A cleverly barbed comedy of depravity-uneven, unsatisfying, but withvirtuoso passages of calculated meanness and, as the centerpiece, a long, drunken Sunday party, with people sitting down to supper when they're too soused to eat.
