When Brandy decides to reclaim her life as an actor, the domestic world she's carefully created crumbles around her. Actress is both a present tense portrait of a dying relationship and an exploration of a complicated woman, performing the role of herself as she faces the desires that exist outside of her home. I couldn't believe how much this captivated me: beautifully shot, fascinatingly inscrutable, set to an immaculately curated soundtrack, and pinned down by the engrossing titular pseudo-performance at its center. Certain stretches - the last few minutes in particular - achieve surprising levels of tension for the subject matter, using nothing but old fashioned good filmmaking. Impulsive and irreverent, but straightforward and grounded nonetheless.

The domestic version of I'm Still Here. Actress is a difficult film with a slippery figure at its heart: Forgoing any semblance of what we recognize as sincerity or authenticity, Brandy Burre is a woman who cannot stop acting a series of parts. Of course, with the extent to which Burre is working in collusion with director Robert Greene in doubt, that's the point: to reveal the essentially and uncomfortably performative character of social life.

I get the point, and I appreciate, in theory, the innovative way that Greene and Burre are attempting to make it. However, every time Tim or one of the children wanders through the frame, alarm bells went off in my head: these are intimate moments of the breakdown of a family and a marriage--I shouldn't be seeing this. I don't think the artistic point is worth the kind of damage that comes with having these kinds of moments on display for all to see--damage to them and to us.

A strange, lovely film that expertly blurs the line between artifice and authenticity.
