An extraordinarily sensitive re-creation of a strike and riot that altered the course of Swedish political life, seen through the eyes of an adolescent boy whose father dies in the events. Bo Widerberg, whoseprevious film was ELVIRA MADIGAN, wrote and directed this beautiful yet uninspired piece of work; lush and lyrical as it is, it's fundamentally didactic, with stereotyped social-realist characters.

The quiet realism of the buildup renders the climax explosively powerful. Political cinema is rarely this truthful. An exceptional film from an exceptional filmmaker.

Interesting slice-of-history detailing a Swedish workers' strike. The focus on the "regular" people sometimes appears a bit random, as were quite a few of the cameraperson's shots (I started wondering if he was working from a different script, especially during the house confrontation scene). It tries to tackle a bunch of issues (labor, teenage pregnancy, military power) but I'm not convinced it dealt with any of them satisfactorily.
