Another great thing about silent movies: They're very unforgiving of poor scripts. Aelita has some brilliant sets and an intriguing premise, but the script is a complete mess of hamfisted political propaganda and a needlessly complex plot where far too much is left to the poor intertitler to try to make sense of. I'm still not convinced he didn't make half of it up on the spot.

Gives new meaning to being bored. Next time this feeling comes over me, I'll now think of this movie and how much better off I must be.

Most silent films feel vary silly nowadays and this is no exception. However, it is an interesting narration for those times, and worth watching at least for witnessing the proclamation of Socialist Republic of Mars.

Just go to Mars already! But I will admit that the Mars costumes and sets are impressively out-of-this-world. The refrigeration process for the Martians enslaved to the Elders is disturbingly reminiscent of the incineration process for the Jews at the Nazi extermination camps.
