This is called the first Soviet science fiction film because of its "futuristic" sets on Mars, although most of it takes place in Moscow. Another great thing about silent movies: They're very unforgiving of poor scripts. Aelita has some brilliant sets and an intriguing premise, but the script is a complete mess of hamfisted political propaganda and a needlessly complex plot where far too much is left to the poor intertitler to try to make sense of. I'm still not convinced he didn't make half of it up on the spot.

Most silent films feel vary silly nowadays and this is no exception. However, it is an interesting narration for those times, and worth watching at least for witnessing the proclamation of Socialist Republic of Mars.
