Much like the lead character, this is a film that has you wondering if it's too clever or too dumb. Even after it's over I'm not really sure. It's a fun neo noir ride, in any case, though it spins its wheels a bit too much and while Bruce Dern plays his character well it's one I find really grating, so every time he was on screen my interest went down.

Jason Patric is a revelation as a very sharp ex-fighter easily mistaken as punch-drunk. Amazingly good noir.

Patric's acting and character prevent this rather average neo-noir from becoming a dull, mediocre one.

Mediocre in most aspects, except for the score, which is fucking atrocious. Also, high-key noir, let that sink in for a second. However, there' are a couple perfect "ooooooh shit" moments near the end that pushes it into "slightly above average" territory.

"On a Jim Thompson scale this comes out lower than The Grifters but higher than The Kill Off."

Wildly melodramatic thriller with dull performances.

Jason Patric looks dangerous, and Bruce Dern gives a very nasty performance, but this is still a second-rate noir.

The mood and pace may be a little too quiet for its own good, but on the whole those qualities befit the particularly dark little noir tale and help Foley's ambitious attempt at reflecting ex-boxer and psych ward escapee Jason Patric's off-kilter mental state. It all culminates to a moment of grim beauty that could've only come from Jim Thompson's twisted fucking mind.
