For some, the countryside is a place of exile where all hopes ultimately merge with solitude. A boundless place of exile where all hopes and dreams merge with despair like the coinciding destinies of fathers and sons. (imdb)

Definitely a huge step forward in NBC's cinema and the best work of his second period (starting with 'Three Monkeys') as he maturely and forgivingly narrates a Heideggerian story of belonging, building, and dwelling. NBC refutes any 'critical' gaze to the country and its conservative people, but embraces the warm despair of their poetic poverty. Perhaps this poverty is consciously swollen by the visual style and the grammar of the movie; sloppy, tottering, yet beautiful in an uncanny way. Great.

A visually breathtaking, intellectually stimulating and consistently engaging 188 minute drama that is nearly, but not quite as perfectly simple yet complex as Ceylan's previous film, the Palme D'or winning 'Winter Sleep'.

Demirkol's unrefined amateurishness serves the role well. His character behaves like a smart-aleck, uppity, superior ass in his quest to get his (most likely) worthless book published. Blind to his surroundings, to the spirit of an old girlfriend, to the worth of his father, he walks around dissatisfied, angry with his country. Yet Ceylan himself doesn't forget the land: it's present in every subtly amazing widescreen composition. And he doesn't forget the kid, who finally finds his place.

The movie depicted cultural and political crises wonderfully and we have the same catastrophe in Iran. I felt that I was watching an Iranian movie cause all the issues were in our house and town and country. Some artificial effects irritated me but it was nothing against the imaginary conceptual perception of Nuri Bilge.

Ozellikle imamlarla girilen diyalog surrealist olmus.

Except for father and son, acting is pretty plastic. Conflict is quite cliched. Yes, society dysfunctions but it's also a never-ending quest. Here, protagonist seems like he has only read the first few pages of Schopenhauer, he sees no joy in anything. He is destined for dissolution in this mythical atmosphere but somehow he identifies with his father and through this he is protected from the evils of society. I say maybe it's not the society that is evil but, as Hegel puts it, the seeing eye.

It's hard to watch a Ceylan film without being constantly reminded of his still photography beginnings, not only because every frame is worthy of framing, but also due to his photo-realistic picture of the human psyche. Few others are capable of printing a thoroughly fascinating 190 minute cut these days. Ceylan just has that kind of patience for human transaction. Dogu Demirkol stars beautifully as the ambitious young writer, fixated on success and resentful to his "loser" father.

3- Tutkulu yazar, her yerde tutkuyla yazar, çatışır, acı çeker. Sinan'ın yazarla, iş adamıyla, imamla, polis arkadaşıyla, ailesiyle girdiği diyaloglar, gelecek endişeleri olan, diplomalı işsiz olarak adeta bir Türkiye özeti. 4- Öğretmen baba idealizmini yitirmiş, at

Every frame a painting, every word a melody of an unsung poem. The dialogue flows naturally like crystal water in a cold fountain. Birds are flying and a dog is barking. A jackal is crying towards the end. Very rarely does art generate feelings so powerful and intense. This is a masterful director, one of the few of his era and I'm only glad he's coming from my neighboring country.

I'll be honest. I watched the entire 3 hours of this marathon of dialogue and left the theatre unsure if I had gotten anything out of it. I was never bored during the whole three hours, which is to the movie's credit, but I also never felt like it imparted any wisdom. At least any wisdom which I was privy too.

I feel like I gotta write a review about it. I have watched it 3 times at cinema theatres and 3 times on my laptop. Each time I focused on a different character. Still I feel like I missed a lot and need to rewatch it. Maybe it is beacause the characters are so real and I like the idea of seeing my real life in a movie. I dont see it as a drama; I see it as a documentary of me or people around me. Gonna be at the top of my list forever. 100!

Fine drama with some Kiarostamiesque qualities, in which moral dilemmas and the struggle of the young writer are intertwined with difficulties of a nation caught between tradition, poverty and modernity. All elements are done well (the character/performance of the father is very good). Also features the original Trojan horse (note: "original" here means, originally from the Wolfgang Petersen film). Possibly deserves a higher score.

Ceylan continues to pursue a literary inspired model of cinema ala Bergman, but there is no denying how good he is at this style, even if he lets the running time get away from him. Ahlat Agaci features typically strong writing and characters of sufficient complexity struggling to deal with the conflicts and problems life presents them. Compared to Winter Sleep, it suffers from the absence of a dynamic lead character, but there is much to admire here from a technical standpoint.

The movie is brilliant and could have been a 5-star one, but that long discussion about religion and existential concerns between Sinan and those two Imams in the village was too prolonged, straightforward and got somehow boring. Using a variety of quotes from the Quran to Nietzsche; oh come on, this is not a narrative method expected of someone like Ceylan.

I suspect NBC is trying something here that I do not entirely comprehend. First of all, the weight of comedians in the cast, keeps you in check the entire time, is this a comedy, or a tragic comedy? Second, the mental asynchronicity and the feeling of superficiality creates an ever-lasting alienation. Third, cinematographically, this is maybe the least NBC movie of all NBC movies.

Tedious. Three hours of a guy fighting with everybody, interspersed with pseudo-intellectual dialogues (and, in one instance, a monologue). The cinematography is so unremarkable (and full of mistakes, esp. during reverse shots) that I had to check whether NBC was not working with Tiryaki anymore. Editing was flawed as well, and many story devices reminded me of student films (and others just went nowhere).

Ceylan is a singularly fascinating film-maker inspired by the weighty concerns of Bergman, but wanting to paint on a much broader canvas: a long, sometimes difficult, perhaps a little long-winded meditation on the creative process (and youthful idealism), with Demirkol capturing the right mix of insolence, aggression and “clutching at the bed clothes at 3am” that the role requires, with the beautiful wide-screen cinematography giving a vivid sense of place and animating the conversations.
