Ai no kawaki

Constantly jolting you with cinematic surprises, a quiet wildness suitable for Etsuko's simmering emotions. Gorgeous close-ups emphasizing sensuality; delirious slow-motion; still images; God's-eye view shots; a restless camera; sudden flashes of color. It's a dizzying, often breathtaking melange of technique, giving voice to Etsuko's mad passion. Asaoka turns in another stellar performance. The music is superb as well, and it's the most visually stunning of the Kurahara movies I've seen.

Strikingly gorgeous, and not just the shot composition, the real marvels are the scenes where the camera glides and/or zooms, effortlessly focusing our attention just where it needs to be, sometimes closing the perspective and sometimes opening it and sometimes just adding flair, always perfectly in tune with the mood of the characters. It's a relatively simple story of obsessive love, but the character and emotional study is complex and wonderfully developed.
