Alabama's Ghost

Despite its reputation as one of the weirdest films ever, this film cannot compete with films like The Holy Mountain etc.; its narrative and tone are far too conventional if you accept the fact that it has Nazis, vampires, magic and cars made out of dinosaur meat in it amongst other things. In its favour, it's one of the few 'everything include the kitchen sink' films that works, with a sense of charm to it and the feeling that it was enjoyable to make.

Usually classified as horror, this surreal mix of psychedelia, voodoo rituals, blaxploitation, racial satire and comments on commercialism and power of media should be placed somewhere between "Holy Mountain" and "Space is the Place" rather than usual genre flicks. While technically it's not the greatest work of art, it's sheer weirdness is enough to keep viewer's interest.

500 words isn't a third of what I'd need to adequately describe this movie's plot, much less tackle its delightfully bent brand of social commentary. Read the lengthy writeup in "Nightmare USA" instead. Singularly bizarre film that compels you to keep watching to see how much weirder it's going to get.
