Gets better throughout and the payoff is good but the stuff leading up to it wasn't that great. Want to watch one of the most awkward scenes ever? Check out Mia Farrow flirting with Joe Mantegna in the beginning of the film, man that was painful to watch. And as a rule the Woody movies where Farrow is the lead really make you long for Keaton to come back.

A fun bag of magic-realism tricks, warm and exuberant even in its interior moments of meditation, which levels hilarious satire at the social elite and finds transcendence in acid trip self-discovery. The irrationalities of people falling in and out of love is a well-trodden path for Allen - and no less true or romantic than it ever has been - but the protagonist's deep-seated Catholic guilt is a swerve from a filmmaker usually associated with Jewish anxiety. Debt to Carroll, Fellini, Bunuel.

Luke is great in his last role. Critically drubbed upon release and not very popular at the box office, this is actually pretty good; its look at how various societal conventions (like marriage and religion) restrict women is heavy-handed and underdeveloped but the cast is perfect and this works a lot better as a fantasy about self-discovery and finding your heart than it does as a feminist rewrite of _Alice in Wonderland_.

Woody was trying to do some new things with some topics that are old hat. I credit him for trying but it didn't work for me.
