That disgusting pervert landlord casting was a lightning in a bottle moment. To write a part like that and have that trundle on in.

Interesting, death-packed, somewhat bizarre thriller with a some intriguing style and atmosphere. Slightly disconcerted to see Paula Sheppard (all attitude, teeth and cheekbones) in this immediately after watching Liquid Sky, her only other film. I like these mad 1970s proto-slashers. Decent, and worth a look.

Definitely very weird. Reminded me a bit of Don't look now.

Proto-slasher with elements of giallo and the stylish visuals of Nicholas Roeg. Pretty much every performance is played with maximum amount of hysterics, almost making you jump when people speak in a normal tone of voice. Tense and damn near impossible to enjoy, it's still one to check out for the genre fan.

It's a decent horror movie with quite effectively disturbing murder scenes, nods to Don't Look Now and giallo, and a very opaque mystery shrouding it all. The opacity is also its downfall, because few of the plot's key elements are made explicit enough for the viewer to follow what's going on and why. Even after the plot was resolved and the film ended I had to go and read the synopsis online to connect the dots, and they just don't connect very well.

A horror movie that doesn't follow conventions and just makes you uncomfortable, you know, in a good way. Who among us didn't dream of killing Brooke Shields?

Strange movie even by (my) "Evil Child" standards
I like a lot of things about it
I like the Giallo in a American movie vibe
I like that they pay tribute to movies that came before it largely
Don’t Look Now
But the acting is WAY over the top and I think the writers director etc sold out by pinning everything on the old lady
But there is something undeniably haunting about it
It makes me feel cheap and dirty and I wanna wash my hands after watching it

Despite some fairly rudimentary acting, this is visually quite well done for a low-budget horror by a first-time director, and manages a bit of thematic complexity. It also does better than most at taking advantage of the psychology of misdirection in order to set up some surprising plot turns (perhaps Rosemary Ritvo, whoever she is, deserves the credit in this regard). Re-watched in December 2020.

This is the best Catholic-themed verite-styled chiller ever lensed in New Jersey, a wonderfully perverse, low-budget "Bad Seed"-type tale.

"Alice, Sweet Alice" is a horror film reminiscent of the Italian "Who Dunnit?" films. The killer wears a yellow rain slicker and a strange mask. It's kind of transparent but there it is also painted with red lips, blush, and eye shadow. The result is an obscured face that almost looks like a horrific drag queen. I loved the look of the mask so much that I bought one similar to it. "Alice, Sweet Alice" is a scary movie with an interesting story that will keep you guessing the whole time.

The film isn't horrible, but it could have been better. There is an odd dissonance here and the filmmakers do a very poor job of handling it almost to the point where it is hard to follow. Not a complete loss, but its execution is disappointing.

Imagine getting a role and its the dude who has piss stains the entire film for some inexplicable reason. Still can't believe Alice was actually 19-years old.

Alfred Sole's stylish, low budget slasher film blends "Don't Look Now", Hitchcock and George Romero's working class, regional atmosphere. There are some really startling brutal killings in this one. Sheppard is particularly good in this, so it's a shame that this and "Liquid Sky" (where she's equally memorable) are her enitire film career.

Somehow both brutal and atmospheric, with a plot that reveals itself slowly and never spells everything out for you explicitly. Easily one of the best horror films of the '70s.

Strong anti-Catholic slasher. This impressive first film from Sole (who's done nothing notable since) makes good use of its restricted budget and features startling plot twists and bizarre murders recalling the early Dario Argento.

[Distant] I've not seen this since I was 8 or 9 but still remember some images and pieces vividly. Not sure what I'd think of it now, but for it's power back then it remains the scariest film I've ever seen.

This is a very uncomfortable film, complete with arguable animal abuse, and it's hard to believe the filmmakers' assertion that it wasn't giallo inspired. It's good, it's spooky, but it's not a classic.

Although presented as a horror, it's more of a thriller, and quite a good one, with some twists along the way. The child actors (including Brooke Shields) were good, but the adult actors not so much. This is the only place it was lacking for me. Creepy!

Featuring fine performances that occasionally turn comically overblown, lots of plot threads that go nowhere and needless twists and turns that feel as unnecessary as they are, it's mostly a mess of a movie and never reaches "hidden gem" status at all. The "look" of the killer is great, & the concept is fascinating, but like too many horror films that's all this one has going for it- a concept. All in all, it might be worth a look if it sounds intriguing, but it's far from great.

Maybe my expectations were too high. I admired the period setting, how ambitious & well directed it was. It can be labeled as a proto-slasher or American Giallo but it's also quite unique. Maybe the ambition hurt the film as IMO there were too many characters and scenes that went on for too long. Then again, the script provided many surprises and brutal scenes where the impact was enhanced by fleshed out characters. Ending left some questions that probably the creators had not figured out.

I used to not like horror films from the seventies or eighties. After two Hooptober challenges I fell in love with eighties horror, not not seventies. Now after seven I am starting to appreciate the seventies. Alice, Sweet Alice is one of the movies that won me over.

Visually striking and thematically profound, this movie managed to surprise me. I was not in love with the plot twist and how it developed from there on, but it remains a great horror movie.
