Alice ou la dernière fugue

For a film allegedly inspired by Alice in Wonderland, this should have been a lot weirder than it is. Chances are you'll guess what's going on within the first 15 minutes and spend the rest of the movie waiting for the main character to catch up - and even then, not everything makes sense. It does have some good atmosphere, and Sylvia Kristel is easy on the eyes, mmmboy.

Illogical, confusing, senseless, abstruse... this film is the opposite of what you would normally want to see. It's also one of Chabrol's best films in terms of immersing the viewer. It's only once you stop looking for meaning or trying to understand, that you can appreciate the film's hypnotic, mesmerising mood and dreamlike narrative. There are hints, fragments of meaning within, but the real enjoyment is in observing Chabrol at work, playing his games with the actors and sets at his disposal.

Slightly better than What? and slightly less interesting than Black Moon, but cut of the same bland cloth. Congratulations. You've managed to make surrealism boring.
