What started out with something that had a lot of promise, creepiness and some cool animation, the movie went downhill fast as the repeated use of "said the white rabbit" became so annoying and completely disrupted the flow of the movie. Take that out and the movie is watchable.

Overall, clever and unique, but I still would've rather skipped it. I don't get into this idea of the children's story with a dark, edgy twist to it. However, this isn't such a bad take on the Alice tale. It features a lot of Svankmajer's trademark decay, disorder, and death-images, but it also maintains the whimsy and anything-goes surreality of Carroll's work. However, the tea party is a tedious repetitive affair. Most egregious is the handling of dialogue: Brechtian, but annoying as hell.

I can watch this over and over again. The environments and sound work are fantastic. Might have been just as interesting without the narration.

The animation is the only part of this movie that doesn't suck, and even the animation is constantly truncated by the misused and terrible sound effects, lack of plot, bad acting, insanely bad dialog, and repeated catch phrase; Alice's "said the white rabbit".

Delicious ideas! Svankmajer's morbid mind has the wonderful virtues of cleverness and visual wit. The White Rabbit is the creepiest bunny I've seen (and I've seen lots of 'em). The only bad idea in this movie is the repetitive dialogue tags, said the White Rabbit.

Visually intriguing and pleasingly warped, but ultimately it feels hollow. The arm's length dialogue/narration and non-existent score make this world feel emptier than it should. While this leads to some frustration during the more repetitive scenes, its creativity saves it from banality. Won't blow your mind, but should at least set a little fire on top of your head.

BY FAR one of the best variants; and the only to capture the dark, politically charged undertones of the original writing. This is also one of the few that leaves you walking away with the book's intended 'how real was it' ideas. The ONLY Alice in Wonderland film to truly delve into the writer's no-so-overt study of where does the line between fantasy and reality end.

I can appreciate the craftsmanship that went into this production, but it never really grabbed me. Alice just moves from weird set piece to weird set piece and then it ends. The drab colors and filthy locations started to wear me down after a while.

Wow, not only does the stop motion kick ass, but as does the interpretation of Carol's wonderful story. The true narrative is not compromised as it is in Disney's, and the true creative insanity of the book is able to come to the surface.

Jan Svankmajer is always interesting, but it's really hard to stretch his style out over a full-length movie. Worth seeing once, but Svankmajer's best work lies in his shorts.

I love Svankmajer's animation and his obsession with decay and flesh. I understand the point as a surrealist for him to keep the motif of the closeups of Alice's lips after every phrase, but that didn't make it less aggravating. Would be a great movie if not for that, I feel.

Utterly bizarre. You'd expect an adaptation of Alice to be strange but this really goes way beyond that. It's worth watching for the wondrously creative visuals and it's unique take on a classic story. That said, it somehow felt like it was missing the adventurous spirit of Alice and was rather uninvolving and distant.

Svankmajer is an amazing animator with incredible talent. I didn't like it as much as I would have hoped, but the animation alone is worth checking out.

Too creepy to be a children's film and too tame to be horror. It's curious, but it's too familiar to feel compelling. It's Alice in Wonderland as you always knew it, but with a slightly darker atmosphere.

No version of Alice in Wonderland will ever reach this level of awesomeness. I'm actually already disappointed with Tim Burton's version, if only because it can't possibly be as accurate to the feel of the book as Svankmajer's version.

The definitive Alice in Wonderland, although ostensibly more drab and less annoyingly pastel than other adaptations of the story, this one feels less depressingly literal and more surreal and disturbing like the book.

Lewis Carroll's book was full of bizzare twists of logic. The weirdness of the book is captured well by Svankmajer's surrealistic style, but the book relied heavily on games with words. Given that Svankmajer chose to show a close up of a mouth everytime a word is uttered this naturally gets a bit grating after a while. It would have worked brilliantly as a short though!

This is a favorite of mine. Js makes films that require (and reward) great attentiveness, as though you are in on his shared hallucination. I have greatly enjoyed watching with smart children, who take advantage of the lack of soundtrack to add more narration. This vision of Alice in wonderland is menacing and crackling with imagination. Not for everyone! Too frightening even for some adults - my own little fellow traveller is an artistic (Alice-like) 6-year-old.

DVD OP.

Almost continuing on with his short film Jabberwocky - which combined another Lewis Carroll work with his take on childhood - Svankmajer made a pretty faithful telling of the famous story as his first feature film, his trademark 'man-made' stop motion animation and surrealist imagination matching a surrealist story perfectly like a glove on a hand. It's at times grotesque and weird, other times amusing and lively, and never feels pointless.

I find this to be an intriguing way of telling the story and I have a lot of appreciation for Jan Svankmajer's creativity here. It's not creepy, but I think describing it as a little darker is the most accurate way to put it. It's not the sort of movie I can watch over and over, but every once in a while I can thoroughly enjoy it.

An interesting film with some excellent puppetry and a fascinating look, but it's pacing issues do it in. Too much time is spent on single scenes with the same thing happening over and over again. The story rarely feels like it's moving at all and for such a short film it can feel twice as long at times. Still worth a view, it's a visually wonderful movie and something incredibly unique.

The quality of the animation is the big draw here. Jan Svankmajer is always one for quality stop-motion with a really bizarre art style. The whole thing flows pretty weirdly though. It feels like it's more about the sights and sounds, and less about telling a story. Of course, Alice in Wonderland didn't have a fantastic plot to begin with. It's just a little odd how there's no musical score, and the only dialogue is some occasional narration from the little girl.

Not as good as I was expecting, but that's probably my fault for letting my expectations get too high. It's very leisurely paced; I found a big section in the middle very boring, with several stretches where Alice is just stuck in a room, one after the other. The sound design is so bad it put my teeth on edge (crinkle crackle crunching), and apparently the only version available is this god-awful English dub, so that didn't help. It's pretty fun though, despite all that. No masterpiece, but fun.

Upon first impression, this film looks like a wonderful, dark interpretation of Alice in Wonderland, but soon the plot gets repetitive (Alenka just goes from one hole to another, from one drawer to the next that looks exactly like the first; she gets big, then she gets small and big again, and so forth). Towards the end, I was bored and this film feels longer than it really is. However, stop-motion animation is wonderful. Once you've seen one Svankmajer's film you'll recognize him every time.

An imagining of "Alice in Wonderland" that's guaranteed to give any child nightmares - and I love it just for that - but it's a stop-motion masterpiece on the whole. The creativity, especially during the first half of the film, seems absolutely relentless.

Less of a film for kids and more of a film for introverted, misanthropic nihilists. This film gave me feelings of despair, worry, intense bemusement, claustrophobia, and slight nausea. This all may be due to the confined, industrial, and unapologetically creepy vibe this film gives off via its unique cinematography, sets, sound design, and mix of film-making styles.

Lovely gothic interpretation of Alice in Wonderland. I've seen pretty much all of the films created by this greatest gothic story for big and small children ever written, and I must admit this one is the closest to the feeling conveyed in the novel itself. The gloomy, the crooked, the weird, the undead, zombified universe of the underground, a wild nightmare if you will.

More dreamlike or nightmarish than any other incarnation of Alice and very knowingly omits the fairy tale aspect of the story, namely the innocence of its protagonist. The design and animation of wonderland is wickedly creative and the atmosphere is properly creepy and surreal. The pacing is all over the place and it may seem like a collection of lovely surreal shorts rather than a coherent feature film. It's still a fascinating, entertaining and well crafted interpretation of a classic story.

A different and slightly darker take on Alice in Wonderland. I loved the stop-motion parts, as they often seemed to evolve directly from Alice's own possessions (which is likely truer to the original story). A little repetitive in parts; I also disliked Alice's blank expression throughout, although I understand that helped "merge" her with her doll persona.

One of the more bizarre films I've seen, this version of Alice in Wonderland seems more interested in having the viewer experience the surrealist and bizarreness of Wonderland than watch Alice experience it. Creepy, unsettling, weird, and completely one of a kind. I didn't always absolutely love it--it feels a bit detached to say the least, but it's totally fascinatingly done, and I'll always highly value something that's completely unlike anything I've seen before.

Švankmajer strips out almost all of the dialogue and yet somehow retains the feel of Alice; that feel being how completely amorally deranged childhood imagination can be, piecing together nightmares from bits and bobs and anthromorphicized objects. The choice to have Alice - or more precisely, a close-up of Alice's mouth, because body parts have agency in Švankmajer's world - narrate the whole thing; the constant look of shock on the rabbit's face; this is a spell.
