There's something wily about ALIEN: RESURRECTION, a movie that splices dread-inducing monster horror with peak '90s smugness and irony. It feels of a piece with STARSHIP TROOPERS, THE FIFTH ELEMENT, and EVENT HORIZON: all 1997 sci-fi movies directed by non-Americans that playfully poke and prod at the uptight, square-jawed norms of Hollywood blockbusters. (In this case, a Joss Whedon script also helps.) It ain't no masterpiece, but with the right attitude it can be a heck of a time.

'Alien: Resurrection' is a little better than the almost total letdown that was its predecessor, but, lamentably, it still lacks the depth of emotion and characterisation of the first two films in the franchise. It really is frustrating to see a movie series that began so promisingly reduced to the substandard fare that are the last of Ellen Ripley's outings. A far-from-auspicious ending.

the cartoonish FIREFLY shenanigans probably don't belong in the ALIEN franchise, but if anything they only make this climax - somehow the most nightmarish of the whole series - all the more unexpected by contrast. i miss the days when tossed off moneygrabbing sequels were as ridiculous as this.

Yes there are plotholes, bad dialogue (not even Weaver can pull off "Who do I have to f-ck to get a ride?"), & Ryder is miscast (she seems too soft to hang w/ mercenaries), but this is the only alien film that digs into its pulpy genre foundations. It wastes far less time pretentiously brewing (& stewing) in the mood & "atmosphere" of the more praised horror chapters & is much more of a thrill ride delivering more variations on aliens attacks & escapes than most of the other films put together.

Betrays the franchise's sci-fi minimalism with a cast of loud and ridiculous characters, hilariously trite dialogue, and action that trades between the melodramatic and cartoonish. It's clearly trying to ape Aliens with its ensemble of hard-edged action heroes, but their one-dimensionality and childishness isn't endearing, and it only cements the franchise's descent into late-stage slasher territory. All it does is take from better movies, and what it adds to the lore is moronic and meaningless.

By far the weakest of the bunch, "Resurrection" simply holds few, if any, surprises, not just for an Alien film, but for a genre movie in general. Jean-Pierre Jeunet's direction is competent but fails to get this movie off the ground. The backstory, the characters and even some details seem kind of haphazard and the expansion of the Alien lore a little desperate. Nevertheless, some great moments will be found herein, such as the underwater sequence, so this is far from a disaster.

A muddled script puts a wrench in Jeunet's US debut from the getgo; there wasn't much he could do but bring his grimy sepia coloured industrial infused style and hope for the best. The concept is good, and the 'new' Ripley is curiously ambiguous, though anemically drawn, but there are serious tonal problems and there isn't enough alien action. The underwater chase sequence is thrilling, despite the ropey effects; the film definitely would have benefitted from more similarly intense scenes.
