Two French Canadian ne'er-do-wells travel to New York City with a scheme to get rich quick selling Christmas trees. Easygoing charmer Rene (Paul Rudd) clashes with misanthropic ex-con Dennis (Paul Giamatti), whose wife Rene just stole. Still, this odd couple must make an honest go of it in this fresh buddy comedy co-starring Sally Hawkins, by the director of the indie breakout hit Junebug. (imdb)

This is an interesting drama. The performances are good in this film, especially Paul Giamatti in one of the lead roles. The script does not have a lot of surprises but it works. Overall I would recommend this film.

Giamatti and Rudd dominate as their characters, but they can't save this slow-paced Christmas movie from being boring.

I liked All Is Bright. There were moments where it got stuck in the mud but I think it was mainly the creators of the movie trying to show the thought process of the ex-con Giamatti's character. He was just released from jail, he takes off with his friend and former partner who is now with his wife, and he goes off to New York to sell Christmas trees to make money to prove he isn't a loser and can buy a Xmas present for his daughter. I think in some ways the slow pace is earned. I enjoyed myself

Another film with a good cast and some potential but ugh it's slow.

A few points for the acting of the main cast, and the original concept, but it sadly falls flat both in the plot and the comedy

At its worst, it's awfully plodding and kinda inconsequential. But Giamatti and Rudd both do an excellent job, and the storyline and milieu are original and appealing in a drab, sort of downbeat way. Not too bad.

All Is Bright sure is depressing. Giamatti, Rudd and particularly Hawkins are all great, but the film is too slow-paced and not funny enough to warrant its 107 minute runtime. Perhaps the film is about Giamatti's character's acceptance that he can't get his life back after prison - a bleak premise. Or worse, the film is about how a leopard can't it's spots as Giamatti quickly graduates from going straight to petty theft to grand larceny- which is equally as bleak.
