It's late 17th century. The viola da gamba player Monsieur de Sainte Colombe comes home to find that his wife died while he was away. In his grief he builds a small house in his garden into wich he moves to dedicate his life to music and his two young daughters Madeleine and Toinette, avoiding the outside world. Some great performances, but it comes off as melodramatic at points. The last scene between Marin and Monsieur de Sainte Colombe was very touching and easily the best part of the film.

Visually sumptuous, and a beautiful soundtrack. It's too bad the movie is such a snooze. Not suggesting it needs a couple of car chases--just some real dramatic interest would not be amiss.

Exquisite costume drama/biography, flawlessly performed by a top-notch cast (with the elder Depardieu and especially Marielle standing out). First half marked by a surprisingly droll sense of humour, before a second half which moves to intense tragedy. Sumptuous cinematography and creative costume design are other assets. A quietly wonderful film.

Accompanied by a chillingly beautiful soundtrack and gorgeous set pieces, it's a sublime piece of time travel and one of the very few movies about classical composers that feels it does justice to the riddle of great musicianship - having said all that, I will say that this is one of my favorite movies ever.

"Tous les matins du monde sont sans retour." Such a sad movie. For me, a combination of the following movies: Photographing Fairies, The Legend of 1900.
