On March 9, 2016, the worlds of Go and artificial intelligence collided in South Korea for an extraordinary best-of-five-game competition, coined The Google DeepMind Challenge Match. Hundreds of millions of people around the world watched as a legendary Go master took on an unproven AI challenger for the first time in history. As the drama unfolds, more questions emerge: What can artificial intelligence reveal about a 3000-year-old game? What can it teach us about humanity? (imdb)

It will probably help your enjoyment of the film if you either play go or are interested in AI, but neither is required. The film does a great job of describing the context of the match, one of the most exciting, and probably the most widely watched match in Go history. DeepMind is a leader in AI research.

One of the most tense sports movies I've watched, mainly because I don't at all share the optimism that artificial intelligence will lead us down a good road. If you have an interest in this subject, it's kind of a must see.

This was unexpectedly tense and captivating; knowing how to actually play Go not a prerequisite;

The program is fabulous but the documentary is not. Just too much advertisement... And over-emotionalness...

I enjoyed this documentary, but I happen to be a former AI researcher who knows several of the people featured in the movie. That said, it wasn't a very powerful documentary. It was kind of a sad note for humanity at the hands of some of my geeky colleagues.

While the beginning was slow, it kept me interested until the end. I wish there was more commentary actually describing why the experts thought a move was bad or the reasoning why a certain move was played at that time. Without that aspect, you are just going along with the emotions of the commentators and experts at that time without a deeper understanding of those moves.

I was actually surprised that the human managed to win one game. Especially when Go is a game with almost infinite possibilities. The human brain can't calculate all of them. So 'Alphago' is not the best example of the power of artificial intelligence.

Nice film about a truly historical event. Skips technicalities and focuses on the human reactions and emotions. Now, something very strange is that Google (the owner of DeepMind) is barely mentioned, if mentioned at all. At some point Sergey Brin appears and says something, and there is not even a subtitle saying who he is.

As it might very well spell doom for mankind (for an interesting take on this subject, check out Arthur Kroker's great book 'Technology and the Canadian Mind'), the stakes are obviously high when it comes to the implications of creative machines. First and foremost, however, this doc is ripe on human drama, and that makes it a very engaging and entertaining watch. Go is my favorite game, but even if you aren't familiar with it, this is definitely worth adding to the top of your Netflix queue.

Surprisingly well told.

Disappointing to see the utterly conventional way this docu was structured and filmed. It was like the most boring parts of all tv sports documentaries combined. There are so many interesting things about the current AI revolution that it could have dealt with and the people who are behind it.

This is more about the people surrounding AlphaGo and its human opponents and less about artificial intelligence and the history, culture, and significance of the game it learned to play. Man vs. machine drama is a topic that has been covered ad nauseam and the world doesn't need any more of it.

This doc haunts me. A tale of the creeping dread of the machines catching up to us, the hubris of man underestimating that which they don't understand and fighting against adversity with nothing left to gain or lose, AlphaGo captures in real life what writers dream of creating from their imaginations.

i was about to nap in the afternoon, but youtube recommended this film. and you know, before going to nap you spend some time on youtube. it's 2023. then, i watched the whole goddamn film even though i really had to sleep. anyways, it's a good advertisementesque film with an interesting real-life story. but i have to say i also watched terminator years ago, and i'm not too fond of machines. i think they're gonna destroy humanity. warning warning!!
