I barely made it through to the end, and then when I did, I wish I hadn't bothered. I'll admit I'm a moody prick who's incapable of enjoying light and optimistic movies, but this is such fucking overkill that they might as well have replaced Amelie with a talking golden retriever wearing a colorful party hat and given it a party whistle for it to blow each time it did something WHIMSICAL.

The best movie I've seen in years. Touched my heart in a way only a few others did before. Audrey Tautou plays brilliant and counts with her charme to the best european actors. Amelie will left a smile upon your face long after you switched of your TV.

A beautiful movie that gets better every time I see it. It's a romance but it's very off beat and original and the supporting characters help give the film a great sense of humor.

A modern masterpiece of wit, whimsy, romance and warmth. In typical Jeunet fashion, the film's visual style is jaw-dropping, with a fistful of clever tricks, gorgeous splashes of bright colors, and a dynamic camera that keeps you on your toes. Audrey Tatou is charming, but really the entire cast is excellent. I also like the blink-and-you'll-miss-it clip from Jules et Jim, and the movie as a whole has a general New Wave-y feel to it.

Today I put my 2 year old son's socks on his stuffed cow. He didn't laugh, but he knew it was silly and he liked it. He kept it close to him and would stop playing from time to time to just look at it and enjoy the silliness. That's kind of how I feel about this movie. I'm not laughing out loud, but I want to be around silliness like this.

A ridiculously cute and charming movie. My inner cynic is a pretty big asshole, so it says a lot that this movie shut up my scoffing and eye rolling within minutes. Audrey Tautou is as cute as a button. Unless your significant other is too dumb to read subtitles, this is an awesome date movie that everyfuckingbody can enjoy.

The simple, beautiful, funny and sad story of a shy Parisian girl named Amelie, and how her father has affected her life. An odd girl, Amelie floats through life, trying to make the best of every situation, until she comes across a man shares a lot of her same whimsical views on life. This is modern French cinema at its finest.

It's a beautiful film for sure, full of wit and lovably odd characters. My only complaint is the movie seemed to drag for the final half hour due to Amelie's own insecurity, instead of simply talking her crush she keeps avoiding him. I understand this is part of her character and is the result of her sheltered upbringing however I still find conflict that could be solved by two people being honest with one another frustrating. This film is still a must see, even if you have that gripe like I do.

Good for the first half hour or so, but soon after it begins to wear out its welcome and becomes absurd. Kind of hard to sympathize when you realize all this whimsy and charm is hiding how much of a manipulative creep Amelie is being. Tautou does bring some great charm though, and the cinematography is excellent - but it stumbles after a great start.

This exercise in cutesy-wootsyness would have benefitted greatly if this starred, instead, Courtney Love, and only on the conditon that she was constantly strung out on meth for the entire shoot, her hair all askew, eyes insanely bugged out, mascara constantly running down her greasy, pock-marked face, and a constant stream of the most profane invective issuing forth from a mouth with a couple blacked-out teeth. Maybe she could break into the odd chicken dance. THEN I would reappraise this.

I loved it. Typically French and an ideal example of how good foreign films can be. The quirky humour went down a treat, the acting is great, espcially Tautou, and the concept and execution was so bizarre, but it all came together and worked. Thoroughly recommend it.

I just don't care. Like I really just don't care about anyone. The acting is very good, and the art direction/cinematography have some nice touches. Its just the script is so full of itself. It thinks it can pass off a few quirks as character development and the narration is very overbearing. Overall though, it would probably at the very least be watchable if the pacing wasn't so slow and drawn out. Shame because it is packaged rather nicely.

Some parts are very cute and funny, and it's visually beautiful. However, I got really tired of Amelie's ridiculously contrived shyness, especially after it was obvious to her that Nino liked her. Also, some of her meddling tactics were just nasty - the grocer didn't ever realize that things were going wrong because someone was retaliating against him for being an ass, so what was the point?

A sheltered and overprotected child, she doesn't really understand love and fears she'll never know the meaning of life. In her anti-social approach, Amelie decides to enrich the lives of those around her by anonymously acting out kind gestures. This is one of those movies that I've watched so many times I can now put it on and use it as a comforting background noise while I go about the rest of my life. Heck, sometimes when I can't sleep I even use it as a grown-up sort of mobile (the kind you see over a baby's bed, not the phone kind). It's full of pretty things, it emits soothing sounds that are only half-recognizable as words, and has an overall feeling of comfort and happiness.

Everything about this movie, the story, the directing, the performances, comes together to create something truly spellbinding. If you don't like this you have no soul. Although the Kitch and Cliche rule "Amélie" with a rod of iron, it is a great movie. It is great because of the hope it succeed to maintain; hope that exists even though you aren't as cute and pretty as Amélie is; exists even though there no single similarity between you and Amélie; exists even though the journey you're about to have is harder. You just know love is going to find you eventually.

It's not easy to come up with new adjectives for Amélie, so may as well stick with the cliches - it's whimsical, it's charming, it's warm, it's funny, and Audrey Tautou is utterly adorable. All the characters' stories are remarkably fun and interesting, and the visual style is wonderfully stylised and frantic. First time I saw this I think I felt it dragged its heels somewhat towards the end (oh no! she got the wrong end of the stick!) but this time I was completely swept up in the journey.

Amélie might not be a perfect film, but none of its flaws really matter while your watching it -- or after you watch it. It's a film you watch and feel incredible after watching. Every moment is imbued with love, and love and joy is what you feel after it finishes. It doesn't need conflict! It has Audrey Tautou playing a charismatic role in a spectacularly joyous movie. Jeunet's style here is, as it elsewhere, Gilliam on amphetamines except now it's centered around a MPDG before the term existed. I have noticed that non-American filmmakers get cut a lot of slack when it comes to forced quirkiness or edginess and this is one of the foremost examples (also see: Lars von Trier). If this positive bias didn't exist Amelie would probably have been reassessed 5-10 years later, like the backlash Donnie Darko, Juno and others faced.

It took me a sec to tune in to its wavelength, but once I did (fairly early on), I was having a good time.
