I barely made it through to the end, and then when I did, I wish I hadn't bothered. I'll admit I'm a moody prick who's incapable of enjoying light and optimistic movies, but this is such fucking overkill that they might as well have replaced Amelie with a talking golden retriever wearing a colorful party hat and given it a party whistle for it to blow each time it did something WHIMSICAL.

The best movie I've seen in years. Touched my heart in a way only a few others did before. Audrey Tautou plays brilliant and counts with her charme to the best european actors. Amelie will left a smile upon your face long after you switched of your TV.

A beautiful movie that gets better every time I see it. It's a romance but it's very off beat and original and the supporting characters help give the film a great sense of humor.

A modern masterpiece of wit, whimsy, romance and warmth. In typical Jeunet fashion, the film's visual style is jaw-dropping, with a fistful of clever tricks, gorgeous splashes of bright colors, and a dynamic camera that keeps you on your toes. Audrey Tatou is charming, but really the entire cast is excellent. I also like the blink-and-you'll-miss-it clip from Jules et Jim, and the movie as a whole has a general New Wave-y feel to it.

Very charming and warm. A very well made film, it has a great pace, exploring quite a bit but it never drags. The ending is great too, it's hard not to feel good inside after watching Amelie.

The movie whisks along charming you at every moment with its childlike awe at the world. The film manages to capture the essence of a dreamer's imagination without resorting to artificial and cliched images. The Tierson soundtrack is also excellent.

Has one of my favorite scenes ever filmed, it fills my heart past bursting with joy when she walks the blind man along the busy road and describes all the sights. I wish I were able to spend time bringing such happiness to strangers.

Today I put my 2 year old son's socks on his stuffed cow. He didn't laugh, but he knew it was silly and he liked it. He kept it close to him and would stop playing from time to time to just look at it and enjoy the silliness. That's kind of how I feel about this movie. I'm not laughing out loud, but I want to be around silliness like this.

I'm not really into these "feel-good" films, but Amélie is an exception. Jeunet's directing is awesome, with lots of clever tiny ideas and details you will notice only after repeated viewings. Very pleasant to watch.

It's a beautiful film for sure, full of wit and lovably odd characters. My only complaint is the movie seemed to drag for the final half hour due to Amelie's own insecurity, instead of simply talking her crush she keeps avoiding him. I understand this is part of her character and is the result of her sheltered upbringing however I still find conflict that could be solved by two people being honest with one another frustrating. This film is still a must see, even if you have that gripe like I do.

A ridiculously cute and charming movie. My inner cynic is a pretty big asshole, so it says a lot that this movie shut up my scoffing and eye rolling within minutes. Audrey Tautou is as cute as a button. Unless your significant other is too dumb to read subtitles, this is an awesome date movie that everyfuckingbody can enjoy.

Good for the first half hour or so, but soon after it begins to wear out its welcome and becomes absurd. Kind of hard to sympathize when you realize all this whimsy and charm is hiding how much of a manipulative creep Amelie is being. Tautou does bring some great charm though, and the cinematography is excellent - but it stumbles after a great start.

The simple, beautiful, funny and sad story of a shy Parisian girl named Amelie, and how her father has affected her life. An odd girl, Amelie floats through life, trying to make the best of every situation, until she comes across a man shares a lot of her same whimsical views on life. This is modern French cinema at its finest.

I loved it. Typically French and an ideal example of how good foreign films can be. The quirky humour went down a treat, the acting is great, espcially Tautou, and the concept and execution was so bizarre, but it all came together and worked. Thoroughly recommend it.

I just don't care. Like I really just don't care about anyone. The acting is very good, and the art direction/cinematography have some nice touches. Its just the script is so full of itself. It thinks it can pass off a few quirks as character development and the narration is very overbearing. Overall though, it would probably at the very least be watchable if the pacing wasn't so slow and drawn out. Shame because it is packaged rather nicely.

This exercise in cutesy-wootsyness would have benefitted greatly if this starred, instead, Courtney Love, and only on the conditon that she was constantly strung out on meth for the entire shoot, her hair all askew, eyes insanely bugged out, mascara constantly running down her greasy, pock-marked face, and a constant stream of the most profane invective issuing forth from a mouth with a couple blacked-out teeth. Maybe she could break into the odd chicken dance. THEN I would reappraise this.

Some parts are very cute and funny, and it's visually beautiful. However, I got really tired of Amelie's ridiculously contrived shyness, especially after it was obvious to her that Nino liked her. Also, some of her meddling tactics were just nasty - the grocer didn't ever realize that things were going wrong because someone was retaliating against him for being an ass, so what was the point?

Apparently I like girl's movies, because I adored this. It's incredibly sweet, and charming, and funny, and all that good stuff. Audrey Tautou is off the hook. She's got an Audrey Hepburn thing going on. Screw that, she's got more of it going on than Hepburn did.

A sheltered and overprotected child, she doesn't really understand love and fears she'll never know the meaning of life. In her anti-social approach, Amelie decides to enrich the lives of those around her by anonymously acting out kind gestures. However, in her task, she begins to fall in love with a man she has only met through a photo journal. The finest romantic comedy in recent memory also has a sublime soundtrack; helping it to become one of the most enjoyable films of the decade.

When I saw this I was deep in my super realism, tell it like it is, and the way it is is that life will chew you up and spit you out phase of my teenage years. I thought I knew everything and that the world was bullshit. If you had told the premise of this movie to me I would have rolled my eyes and scoffed at the thought of liking it. I watched it, I loved it. It didn't change my views but it certainly showed how great of a movie it is if I didn't think it was bullshit as an asshole 19 year old

It's not easy to come up with new adjectives for Amélie, so may as well stick with the cliches - it's whimsical, it's charming, it's warm, it's funny, and Audrey Tautou is utterly adorable. All the characters' stories are remarkably fun and interesting, and the visual style is wonderfully stylised and frantic. First time I saw this I think I felt it dragged its heels somewhat towards the end (oh no! she got the wrong end of the stick!) but this time I was completely swept up in the journey.

Intriguing, lovely, different. Amelie is an unordinary girl with great setting, million tiny details and billion ordinary life stories, great acting and a wonderful sound score. She's just too cute too miss!

A sweet clever little movie. The screenplay is a little post-modernist for my taste, but it is still a charming film.

I want to like it more, but I find its whimsy quirk mostly gaudy.

Beautiful and heartwarming. An unpredictable tale of two eccentric outsiders who eventually find their own place in the world.

Strange and quirky. A cult movie. But a fun-loving film with a positive thematic message. Very colourful and idiosyncratic characters.

Possibly the best movie ever made, and quirky romance most definitely isn't my kind of thing. Everything about this movie, the story, the directing, the performances, comes together to create something truly spellbinding. If you don't like this you have no soul. It has a few minor flaws on repeat viewings, but the enjoyment never fades. Should be in every guy's collection as a date/night-in movie.

The film seemed unsure whether it wanted to be surreal, light-hearted or semi-serious slice-of-life sort of stuff. With this directionless feeling it came off mildly frustrating on the whole.

Amélie might not be a perfect film, but none of its flaws really matter while your watching it -- or after you watch it. It's a film you watch and feel incredible after watching. Every moment is imbued with love, and love and joy is what you feel after it finishes. It doesn't need conflict! It has Audrey Tautou playing a charismatic role in a spectacularly joyous movie. Do you need than that? No. The answer you want is an emphatic "no."

Amazing, quirky romance film. Few films have made me feel so good after watching it. Along with the fun story and characters, the visual style adds so much to the joyousness of this film.

"Fresh from the Jeunet quirk factory comes Amélie, a self-indulgent Montmartre-set fairy tale that's the cinematic equivalent of a dribbling lump of caramel taffy." - Ed Gonzalez

Although the Kitch and Cliche rule "Amélie" with a rod of iron, it is a great movie. It is great because of the hope it succeed to maintain; hope that exists even though you aren't as cute and pretty as Amélie is; exists even though there no single similarity between you and Amélie; exists even though the journey you're about to have is harder. You just know love is going to find you eventually.

Can't base a whole movie about your main actress being cute.

A lovely movie and beautifully filmed and sometimes quite funny too. Audrey Tautou is also really easy to rest your eyes on.
Only real drawback is that I didn't care as much for the romance as I would have liked.

Never before have I seen such divide in my Kumpels as to whether this, as described by Holden, constitutes a barrage of crap the patience and resilience of a marathon runner is required for to deal with, or, as described by those who I'd imagined would not like the film at all--eg the often serious drudges and the one with the barren heart, Zewe--is joyous 'n fun. I conclude Amelie is that quantum slit experiment, in which it's shit or fun depending on what state you happened to be and measure i

Amélie is a well-made romp that's sure to divide viewers based on how much whimsy they can stomach.
