Paul Weitz brings us an utterly insane comedy about politics, reality TV and the idea that everybody in America has a dream - and how that 'great thing' can actually drive our culture crazy. (Universal Pictures)

Satire about as subtle as using a sledgehammer to stroke a baby, and this fact will probably annoy the many. But I don't know. Weitz seems to have such a relentless hatred for talent shows as well as American pop culture, that I cannot help thinking that in another life, we would have been the best of friends.

Atrociously dormant, feeble political comedy that makes the sort of topical jokes the dim guy at the office has lampooned. Toothless and unfunny.

LOOK AT OUR STATEMENT ABOUT POLITICS AND AMERICA TODAY! ISNT IT WITTY!? It is actually pretty good at points, but even as a left-leaning moderate I still found this movie nearly insufferable.

American Dreamz is a weak excuse for satire. The president is stupid and the nation is captivated by a shitty singing contest. Wow, thank you for the penetrating insight. It shouldn't take you an hour and forty five minutes to say something so obvious. The one highlight is Sam Golzari, who is too fucking adorable to hate.

Don't get me wrong this is a brutal movie to watch... for the most part. The ending though had me laughing a little bit. I don't know if I was actually laughing at the humor of the movie, or if I was laughing at how stupid the movie was, but I was laughing. I laughed so hard I woke my date up who had fallen asleep about 20 minutes into it. Chris Klein should try re-enacting that exit scene in more of his films.

I've said it before and I'll say it again. Bad comedies are the worst kind of film.

I understand what this movie was trying to do, I just didn't like how it was done. It was kind of lame. A George Bush parody throughout the film... seriously? A little bit Cliche. They could have done a movie with this message way better.

Unfunny. It even has a premise that could work, but no. Everything is very silly and superficial.

I loved the concept of making fun of George Bush and Simon Cowell at the same time. However, in this movie things turned into a mush of sappy political life meaning lessons with a dash of outdated songs.

Mandy Moore and Hugh Grant were good, and I actually didn't despise Dennis Quaid, but the film isn't THAT hilarious like the trailer would have you expect. Still, I enjoyed it. Especially when the actual competition began.

This was a hoot! Completely skewering America's obsession with "Idol" and the fact that more people vote for a reality show than the presidency is by far a more intelligent movie that's come along in a while. And it's doggone funny as well.

Inept and embarassing; plays like a live-action issue of Mad Magazine.

Thus, we get an outrageous third act suggesting that people will always line up for the next showing without taking time to digest the last one. America's appetite for shallow, thoughtless entertainment is endless. True enough. But Weitz gives us no reason not to want to chow down. Instead, American Dreamz turns out to be just another helping of empty calories from the pop culture smorgasbord. And not a very tasty one, at that. (pluggedin.com)

A compelling time-waster, but that's all it is: fluff. Not Weitz's best work, though you can certainly see why he would be compelled to make this movie. He just gathered all of his friends from previous projects and made a 90min SNL skit. Some of the performances are quite good: Dafoe especially, and Grant should never make movies without Weitz again. Still, despite its bleakness, and very wry sense of humour, it falls short. There's potential for great satire, but the final product lacks depth.

This movie had the potential to be a good satire but it falls flat on its execution. The script really falls apart near the end and the characters are very one dimensional.

Satire is strange. People who don't get it won't like it, people who agree will not learn anything new.

An awful film. This might be partly because I didn't know how to take it. If it was supposed to be funny I didn't laugh. If it was supposed to be serious it wasn't moving. At least I saw it for free.

Like "Idol", Dreamz is little more than easily digestible entertainment for a fast-food culture; enjoyable for the moment, but disposable once you've had your fill.

Ultra fun satire slash black comedy. How can you go wrong with a plot to assassinate the president by infiltrating an American Idol show he's attending for publicity. Terrorist sleepers as musical theatre performers. Great cast. Good fun.
