This was just great! I've come to like Tom Cruise's work from the last ten years and this was a role that he was (American) made for. Terrible pun aside, he devlivers a very Cruiseish role but he makes the film entertaining. Linmans directing is pretty good as well as the story. It did feel a little long, but it's got enough sense of humor and story to make it entertaining and interesting.

A movie that treads well traveled ground. We've all seen cartels and drug running before. Some events themselves even feel rather derivative, hearkening back to a number of crime movies like "Blow," and even "Goodfellas," but for the lack of originality, "American Made" is still WELL made. It never strays too far away from something interesting and Cruise may be over fifty, but he's still serviceable. I have few complaints, but no praise for this one.

I'm willing to give this a light 80 because it's ultimately breezy and just fun, which is what I wanted. I'll never watch it again, it's not like there are any real serious stakes here, and Tom Cruise doesn't have to strain to hard (while still putting in good work as always)... but yet it was still a great time. The few times it really shot for comedy I thought it had some of the better gags this year, Liman brought an interesting style to it. Just don't expect some substantial masterpiece.

The filmmakers clearly aimed to create a rollicking adventure with some ironic points to make, but the key repeated line about "don't tell me America isn't the greatest country" is a clunker that can't carry the weight of those aims. The overall impression is of a film that is rather empty at its core and too desperate to entertain, in a way that fails to justify what seems like a very cavalier approach to the facts of the story. Either needed to strike a better balance or have a wittier script.

American Made is entertaining, though its superficial criticism of the CIA aside, doesn't have anything of substance to say despite its psuedo-biographical nature. Cruise still captures an essence of Barry Seal's (alleged) motivations, while playing him as a likeable character. Gleeson works well as a smarmy CIA agent. The ending is lacklustre, and while there are moments that are good, the sum total of the film never surpasses mediocrity.

I enjoyed watching this fanciful story about drug smuggling and gun running. It involves the CIA, DEA, drug cartels and corrupt countries. Tom Cruise was entertaining with his upbeat, devil may care attitude. The story was inspired by true events but there was plenty of fiction added to increase the intrigue and shock value. Overall, it was fun and entertaining but not really worthy of a second viewing.

This would have been far worse had it played itself too seriously. By being as light-hearted as it is (while still having some minor sense of stakes and risk), I feel it strikes a good-enough balance between storytelling and purely-popcorn entertainment. The fact that it's given a "Hollywood shine" in terms of not sticking completely to the facts doesn't bother me at all; there are plenty of documentaries on the Medellin and Iran-Contra; seek them out. Just enjoy a kinetic, entertaining movie.

A decent enough drug smuggling film partially hurt by the casting. Focuses a bit too much on the glitz and glam and not enough on the dirt. The dialogue is simply too Hollywood. Tom Cruise is Tom Cruise in this when the real life Barry Seal was an oafish looking but still charismatic man. Cruise is the farthest thing from Barry Seal. Overall the pacing was good and it was entertaining but there is very little meat on the bones here.

In terms of action and fun, it didn't give me the zing I had hoped for. But it kind of did at certain points. I am sure that taking all these events and turning them into a good movie is a very difficult job for a writer, and this screenplay falls just short of succeeding at it. Still, the writing was respectable, and the production, editing and acting were all admirable, so I enjoyed it. And Cruise was as entertaining as ever, which somewhat made up for everything else for me.

AM is worthy of my seal of approval, it's just that much fun, though I have to mention I'm a sucker for this type of film. There's quite a lot of meat on the bone clocking in at two hours, but feels light on its feet due to the fast pacing. Tom Cruise delivers, direction is spot on and the story is great.

I feel like I've seen a million rough variations on this story before (not specifically the Iran-Contra stuff I mean, but just a guy getting swept up in crime and living the high life and then getting busted and his fall, etc.) in both film and TV form, but that doesn't mean that this isn't a laudably energetic and watchable take on it. I wouldn't mind if more of these historical takes could have this sort of lighthearted touch.

I'm really surprised this is the first movie (that I've seen) about Iran-Contra (even if only the first part of it). It's one of the most interesting and crazy modern American scandals, and is ripe for the screen. Liman's direction is appropriately frenetic, and I'm pretty down with everything Cruise does. Downside is that you don't really get a great sense of the bigger politics of what was happening, so at times it feels a little too unfocused.

Engaging, well told story, but with a couple of glaring historical rejiggings: 1. Seal was a drug runner for Pablo Escobar without any patriotic aspect to what he was doing. 2. According to the Washington Times reporter, Edmund Jacoby, as noted at History vs Hollywood, "Despite the movie attempting to pin (outing Seal) on Oliver North, Jacoby later said that North was not his source and that it was a deceased Special Forces and CIA guy named Ted Lunger, who at the time worked as a staff member f

It's intriguing and original, but it's missing something I can't quite put my finger on. It needed less Tom Cruise, or Doug Liman, or Domhnall Gleeson, or these weird caricatures of the Cartel. Oh, and it needed a better ending, but I guess we can blame Reagan for that.

Covering a lot of the same thematic ground as Wolf of Wall Street, this Tom Cruise vehicle doesn't fare well in comparison and fails to get off the runway as a whole. Cruise does fine as the protagonist, and the Colombian scenes were good but I thought Gleeson was miscast. Only a week since I've seen this but I'm struggling to remember too much about it which says a lot.

American Made is based on a true story but has been fit into a typical Hollywood rise-and-fall storyline. It gets repetitive midway through, and it doesn't have a protagonist worth investing in, leaving us feeling bored and a little frustrated. It's an ugly-looking movie, and while it has some laughs, they're not enough to make it worth watching. Tom Cruise tries his best to hold our interest, but he ultimately can't do enough to save the movie. American Made is a mediocre movie.

AMERICAN MADE walks a well-trodden path through the boom and bust of '80s narco-culture, stylishly swaggering through events that devastated Central American nations, accelerated the decline of inner cities, and corrupted numerous American institutions. The film surprisingly attempts to compensate for this with a simultaneously paranoid and bittersweet coda that belies all the formulaic, freewheeling action that precedes it. I find it all begrudgingly entertaining.

Taking a quick look at the real Barry Seal's history online suggests there's a lot of artistic license taken here, which makes it puzzling that the makers have tried to cram in so much: the frenzy of characters and situations flying past so fast you get dizzy. It's a fun romp though, presented with style and starring Cruise in a role he's perfect for. Funky, lighthearted, and enjoyable enough for its duration, this just feels like a story we've seen on screen too many times before.

The 'based on real life story' movie where you see someone starting small, making big bucks and then getting screwed at one point or another. This causes them to either crash and burn or somehow they make it out of the trap, you never know. Told in a clear and compelling way, Tom Cruise works well in this role. He's kind of nobody and Tom Cruise at the same time, which is why I how feel about him as an actor. Nice music choices here, too. A solid crime thriller.

the whole movie has a "catch me if you can" vibe where cruise's character, barry, is portrayed as a lovable ruffian; a greedy yet personable maverick, going through a series of mishaps and adventures. the reality, of course, was that barry seal was an insufferable asshole who colluded with the us government in drug trafficking, while countless people in the south americas died in the process. so, all in all, great popcorn flick.

Really messy, long, repetitive, and comes across like some sort of Catch Me If You Can / Wolf of Wall Street wannabe. "I'm a real person! I was there with Escobar in 1979! All this really happened" etc. Full of annoying montages too. It just tries to cover far too big and complex a story. The family and US business stuff was quite uninteresting. There must be so many more interesting movie plots one could write about Escobar's personal drug pilot. Sorry Tom, you do serious better than wacko.

American Made is not the film that I expected but it was much more entertaining than I anticipated. Tom Cruise is an absolute blast and he brings so much charisma to this incredibly over the top, ridiculously fast paced and what I can only assume is a drastically inaccurate piece of story telling from Doug Liman. Many elements feel like they are taken from better films and whilst nothing in particular excels, everything entertains and with a great deal of disbelief I thoroughly enjoyed myself.

Although the film's raw, documentary-like style threw me off at first, "American Made" is proven to be engaging and fun.
