Very, very entertaining film. I'll be honest and say that I have not read the book and I don't "remember the 80's," as I was only 7 when they ended, but I still really enjoyed the film. It's satire of culture is very unusual and Christian Bale is absolutely capivating in it. Seeing him rapidly cycle through emotions right at the end of the movie is an absolute marvel to behold. Great movie.

Recently rewatched this for the (5th, 6th?) time after finishing Bret Easton Ellis's fantastic novel and it became so much better. Murder has never been so funny. One of the darkest comedies you will ever see and the social critique is great. The sheer ridiculousness of every situation, every person, and every thing that happens makes it impossible for me to not love. The scene with Jared Leto in his apartment is so great. TRY GETTING A RESERVATION AT DORSIA NOW YOU FUCKING STUPID BASTARD!

A seriously flawed masterpiece. The misconceptions and confusion over whether it was all real or not (I believe not, even if this was the opposite of the intentions of the director) hinder an otherwise fantastic movie and definitely drag it down. It really is such a shame, primarily because Bale puts in the best performance of his career, in fact easily one the best performances I have ever seen. Captivating, shocking and wonderful, with an excellent '80s soundtrack and fantastic screenplay.

Moral decay as only Bret Easton Ellis could write, for the first time translates onto the big screen quite well. This is, if not the best, very close to being the best serial killer movie, although it only very loosely falls into that category.

Bale gives what has to be among the most entertaining performances in cinema, and the film itself is an inspired adaptation of the novel (which I also love). Harron condenses the repetitive text and dispenses with the worst of the gore. What's left is a virtuosic satire of the 80's and the corporate culture we still live in. There are too many great scenes to talk about in detail, but I always lose it when there's that pan to Bateman alone in his office listening to "Lady in Red".

Chris Bale's amazing acting propels brilliantly timed comedy through a movie which uses violence, excess and gore to make fascinating points about male vanity and the nature of sanity. It's not just a frightening look at a killer or a hilarious farce about a madman but also a statement about our own minds, fears and desires. Magnificent film indeed!

Decent adaptation - it feels more like a highlight reel of the best scenes from the book with something of a plot thrown in near the end. Bale's superb performance and many of Ellis's classic lines still make this enjoyable.

A modern masterpiece about the stresses of materialism, public/private life duality, and authenticity. Very well played by Bale, with a nice (surprising!) cameo from Dafoe. The movie will improve with repeat viewings. The scene with the business cards was great, not to mention all of Bale's nudity throughout the film. MEOW.

The murder scenes were disturbingly entertaining and individually memorable, and watching Christian Bale overact is quite the treat. But the satire is reduced down to 'rich men in the 1980s were dickheads', which isn't a very meaningful message, and having it be a fantasy is much less effective when it can't benefit from the unreliable narrator of the book. Less than the sum of its parts.

Satire always risks being embraced by the targets it mocks. That could explain why Mary Harron's feminist picture is loved by Film Bros, even though it's a damning indictment of toxic masculinity, greed, and white privilege. The voice is still so authentic that they see the villain protagonist narration as illustrating their own warped thoughts. It also works as a movie--one that transcends slasher flicks by its endlessly quotable dialogue and drama between action set pieces. Highly recommended.

Bale is an even better actor than Reagan! Ellis' book isn't the most adaptable (all that inner dialogue) but here was a character aching to be performed. Ambiguity about how much of his carnage is real or fantasized puts a spin on the exploration of self-image/public perception - which Patrick Bateman is the fiction?

Christian Bale captures the character of Patrick Bateman well enough, but it is simply too monumental a task to translate any of Ellis' work to film. If you must see this movie, do so...otherwise, pick up the paperback and have ten times the fun.

A very tricky novel to bring to the screen, but Harron pretty much pulls it off. Bale is in captivating form as Patrick Bateman, and the supporting cast fit in wonderfully. Ellis' themes translate well to the screen, the main commentary on superficiality and viciousness is intact, as is much of the dark, dark humour, combining to show us a version of the 1980s we don't often see. Efficient and effective, stylish, funny and nasty. Highlight for me? "Let's see Paul Allen's card".

It's a heavy-handed satire full of over-the-top violence. While this type of in-your-face exploitation is not usually my cup of tea, Christian Bale's performance is absolutely ridiculous and makes it essential viewing for the genre. His rapid-fire rampage through the spectrum of human emotions helps create one of the strangest, most memorable characters in modern cinema. Bateman's monologues and ending murder spree have become the stuff of dark-comedy legend.

by no means a flawless movie, but a flawless statement. both book and movie are mirroring the vast shortcomings of a society focused solely on appearances and consumption. bateman is the perfect catalyst for the dilemma of aching to partake, while resorting to increasingly drastic measures to tune out the emptiness that creates. his "mania" is a desperate scream for anything of relevance. despite the 80s wall street backdrop, this is in no way a period piece and still as valid as it ever was.

Reintepreting A.P as a black comedy with thriller elements is a double edged sword. Harron cuts to the chase by finding a lively rhythm, streamlining Ellis' verbosity into something more manageable, but in the process the sharp satire becomes a cartoonish farce, magnified by the exaggerated mannerisms of Bale who looks the part but completely overdoes it. It is entertaining, but neither Bale or Harron capture Bateman's pure grotesquerie, and it isn't because they toned down the violence.

Good attempt at a strong & "unadaptable" book. Most scenes work fantastically but as a whole I feel it lacks some kind of sufficient cinematic edge or cohesion to make the story and ending hit the way it seemingly intends. An unreasonable expectation perhaps but one the film sets up for itself. Due to the nature of the story it's constantly on the verge of farce & I'm impressed at how well it balances its tone (although how it makes you feel is bound to be more subjective than most films).

I told this before and I tell it again, New York socialites are scary people; but you must admit it when they lose it they lose it with style. Bale did a great job on a wonderfully written character and whoever casted this movie should be considered "Casting Guru". If nothing, it will make me read one or two Bret Easton Ellis books; that's for sure. In a weird way, it feels like a Batman "What if?" story, because Bateman is like Bruce Wayne who said "Screw it; what do I care for this society?"

Although initially frowned upon by critics, Harron's American Psycho manages to capture the tone of Ellis' masterpiece. "American Psycho" is hollow as a satire, but as a pitch-black, gory comedy it can become quite fun. Harron's direction is smart and assured, the script is superficial but brims with delightfully eccentric touches and Bale's performance is equally powerful and hilarious. Although the film itself seems to acknowledge its own meaninglessness in the final scene, it remains an entertaining and occasionally thrilling ride, with a gripping scene involving a chainsaw being the darkest highlight.

A damn good time. It’s memed up so much at this point and discussed by cinephiles so much that I’m surprised I was able to go in this late free of spoilers. Bale is perhaps at his very best here, but I suppose that’s debatable. He just has so much range in this and he delivers every line perfectly. I personally loved the satire. It was hilarious and just thought-provoking enough, and the pacing rivals Wes Craven’s works. It’s also just really entertaining. Deserving of its reputation.”Hey Paul!”

American Psycho is black comedy at its most brutal. Bale plays a young wall street businessman who works at his daddy's company. His hobby is keeping himself and his apartment in pristine condition...and murder. Bateman is a sociopath. He doesn't kill for any reason other than his contempt for humanity. He doesn't feel anything for the people around himself or himself. The casting in this movie is fantastic and all of the people play rich assholes perfectly. There is a lot of digest in this film

Granted a vp slot in the m&a department of dads company, Bateman, alongside 4 others with that very same position at that very same department, not having to do anything due to in all likelihood not being able to, realizes the entrapment, decompensates, denies/ hates the self, turns suicidal, yet remains unable to undermine the structures out of which his identity emerges. Manipulation of objects within his immediacy, so as to reaffirm the self, only provides temporary relief.

I'm always game for Reagan-era satire, and this consistently hits the nail on the head. It's not perfect, but there are some really wonderful moments, some gleefully insane, some touchingly muted. It succeeds as a treatise on the nature of excess and privilege, questioning whether the prize of power and wealth and the opportunities it bestows are just as banal as the ones one would have without them, and the only real difference is that one doesn't have to worry as much about one's conscience.

"American Psycho" has an uneven script with shades brilliance. The performance from Christian Bale really saves this movie. He hits the nail right on the head with his interpretation of the Patrick Bateman character. Too bad that the filmmakers leave the audience hanging in its final moments. Everything becomes too ambiguous. But the film can't be discounted for it--it is equally horrifying and hilarious, and Bale is too good to not recognize the film for its daring ambition.

Bale is simply on a roll. Darkly satirical look into the mind of insanity. The mind of the fictional murderous Patrick Bateman, one of the most important film characters I've ever known. A marvel to behold and seeing the movie rapidly cycle through emotions in the end is quite a sight to see. Brilliant and Harron has submitted her name into expert status when it comes to producing and directing a movie. Classic.

As this neat, 1980s music fan, Bateman looks like a hero from the late 1980s/early 1990s, one of those yuppies trapped in a net of misunderstandings and dangerous women. Here, Harron crafts some sort of a yuppie revenge: Bale embodies a double man in a restrained, nervous, about-to-explode performance, but the film often shifts from black comedy to psycho thriller, not always successful between transitions.

Despite having a terrific premise - and a chillingly brilliant performance from Christian Bale - I felt the film essentially did nothing but establish a series of loose ends which it never tied up. As a character piece; and as an example of how queasy violence SHOULD be portrayed in film; this is a must-see. It's just a shame that the pay-out (or lack thereof) gave no hint of closure, which made the whole experience oddly unsatisfying when the credits rolled.

I had to kill alot of people! That sums up the movie quite nicely. This is the film that introduced the masses to Christian Bale and really brought a darker version of the 80s to the forefront. Based on a novel, the out of character placement of some really bitchin 80s music, especially Hip to be Square, really makes this standout as a well-conceived slasher film, and makes the character of Bateman a horror favorite. Just remember to feed the atm a cat. Rent this if you haven't seen it.

It was very sophisticated to create a protagonist as Patrick Bateman on a big screen. Ellis' novel consists of harsh details, deep violence and sex. An applause for Harron, because it was almost impossible to put all these details into the movie. Magnificent Christian Bale's interpretation -- especially soliloquy monologues. If you're looking for mind-fuck, sarcasm and black humour -- it's here -- American Psycho. A masterpiece.

I like many of the individual scenes more than the entire movie as a whole. Presumably because watching the whole film front to back is an hour and 45 minutes without even an attempt at subtlety. Watching individual scenes makes it feel less dragged down by how heavy handed it is. I still don't know if Bale's performance is perfect or so ridiculous it's bad.

Bale is nothing short of inspired in this brilliant and darkly funny thriller. Personally I enjoy the films ambiguity when it comes to the ending, however it understandably does grate with some. Brilliant direction with the 80's yuppie vibe perfectly captured, Psycho's atrocious acts are often just alluded to: this one firmly plays for laughs, particularly during the (fantastically selected) pop tracks Patrick plays while slaughtering. Bale is on top of his game throughout, none more so than when collapsing with envy at his friends' minor one-upmanships. The conclusion is rushed and a bit of a cop-out, but it's still one of the best black comedies on the big screen.

Clever, witty, intense and refreshing, American Psycho gives us a whole new take on the serial killer. Christian Bale gives the performance of his career, managing to be both likable and haunting. Eccentric but never overly so, American Psycho is a thrilling ride that may not be for the squeemish, but is definitely reccomend for everyone else.

Hilarious. A whole heckuva lot more enjoyable than the (utterly dull, completely skippable) novel. It does start to feel samey after a while, since it doesn't really manage to crank up the suspense or the absurdity, but fortunately it doesn't completely outstay its welcome. Not big on Bale, but he's incredible in this.

A tight and competent depiction of Ellis's most famous novel, with a chilling performance by Christian Bale as the film's charming serial killer. The film manages to be thrilling and scary, while simultaneously serving as a pointed dark satire of the excesses of materialism, and though sometimes it gets too wrapped up in its own stylistic devices, it definitely leaves an impact with its ambiguous ending.

This is a pretty great satire of 80s excess, but it also feels like it could easily be applied to the present and work just as well. Bale is fantastic as an unhinged yuppie. The film just wouldn't work without a great central performance, and he delivers.

American Psycho, I really wanna love you, I do. I've watched you like five times in order to see if the love grows, but it's like it's just not there. I don't know if it's because I find your style too uncertain or your writing too perplexing. I know it's not because of Christian Bale. If I had only seen him in this I would have cast him in every other movie ever made. I even like your ending, the movie that precedes it just leaves me as empty as Batemans soul.

The director does a poor job of telling this story. He leaves you with only a vague sense of the truth at the end. I usually like Christian Bale, but much of his acting felt phoney and was unconvincing. Reese Witherspoon was underutilized and wasted. Cara Seymour stands out, as does Guinevere Turner. The story has potential, and if told better, could make a great movie. But, this movie is lacking in almost every area. Especially in believability and clarity. Even the gore is rather cheaply done.

It's actually really enjoyable and fun to watch, even if the main source of it is Christian Bale himself, who puts up a hilarious and absurd performance that I thoroughly enjoyed. Yes, the script does lack subtlety with very self-obsessed dislikable characters but it was hella quotable. Some scenes are absurd -how can you get away with a shooting like that?- but I'm willing to overlook it with Bale's performance and the claustrophobic and miserable portrayal of NYC.

This movie is so disturbing but it's also VERY hilarious and smart. It pretty much sums up everything that sucked about the 80's, for example Patrick Bateman's god-awful taste in music. Christian Bale goes all out douche-bag/psychopath...I can't decide if he's an amazing actor or a dick in real life. Before you watch this, see The Machinist, his body transformation (and his butt!) are unbelievabl

While the film is endlessly quotable and deliciously dark, the main satirical thrust of the film is a bit too heavy-handed for my taste. The black comedy / horror elements hold up fairly well throughout, but much of the Wall Street excess message drags it down overall. Bale is so wonderfully campy as the titular psycho with an insatiable bloodlust that his over-the-top performance absolutely carries the film. Definitely not for everyone.

American Psycho is clever and hilarious, one of the most shocking and original comedies out there. The social commentary is shallow and it's a little awkward in the rare moments where the movie tries to be more than a comedy (like the ending). But for the most part American Psycho is so simultaneously funny and thrilling that I always feel like I haven't gotten my fill by the end of it.

American Psycho starts with a strong premise but quickly ventures into the infantile with its indulgent dialogue and unfortunate choice to illicit sympathy for Bale's character. The film portrays its characters as utterly detestable, perhaps as a way of critiquing the type of capitalism they follow, though not very effectively. It can also be seen as an examination of the fragile male ego broken by ruthless competitiveness. Bale's performance was good, but the film was less so.

The odd opening few scenes (see the lead's detailed account of his facial care regime) start things off shakily, but soon it all comes together, as the oddball men-in-suits culture satire (see the business card envy) meshes nicely with the sadistic exploits of the bonkers Bateman (see his pre-murder music reviews), whose unique descent into madness (played brilliantly by Bale; see especially his phone confession) unfortunately leads to an ambiguous ending dangerously close to being cliche.

I first watched this in high school while writing a paper for my film as literature class. The thesis of my essay revolved around the psychology of people watching incredibly disturbing movies, and since we had to pick a film we'd never seen before, I chose this one. I feel awkward reviewing this without having read the original book, but Bateman's performance is stellar, and it's obviously left its imprint on pop culture. I lost it at the business card scene. I give it a 79-- it's almost great.

I saw this at the cinema when it came out and this was probably just my second viewing some 19 years later, and I wasn't a fan. The soundtrack was great and Christian Bale is fantastic in one of his earlier roles, but the film itself is a little disjointed. Some will argue that that was the point but it leaves too much left unsaid and a confusing film without much of a conclusion.

Patrick Bateman: "My pain is constant and sharp, and I do not hope for a better world for anyone. In fact, I want my pain to be inflicted on others. I want no one to escape. But even after admitting this, there is no catharsis; my punishment continues to elude me, and I gain no deeper knowledge of myself. No new knowledge can be extracted from my telling. This confession has meant nothing."
