With only "She's repressed, oppressed, and depressed" as motivation to fall in love, the romance—the very slow, very quiet, occasionally beautiful sequences of it—never feels substantial, certainly not substantial enough to earn the, uh, intimate goodbye scene or the nebulous symbolical ending. Underwhelming.

Simultaneously overcooked and underdone drama; the furious waves are a heavy handed (at times laughable) metaphor for the apparent roiling passions between Winslet and Ronan, but Winslet's character is so ornery and closed off that it is difficult to understand or appreciate the "love" story. This not the fault of Winslet, who actually delivers a quietly stunning portrait of repression, but the screenplay lets her down, especially towards the pretentiously elliptical, puzzling ending.

Pretty similar to Lee's last gay romance in wet conditions film, and also quite similar to Portrait of a Lady on Fire, but simply inferior to both. Acts out like wooden soap opera, with two differently but equally mopey ladies, and doesn't lead anywhere unexpected or fascinating. Only good scene is the sex scene - nice!

Weirdly underwhelming.

Hollywood mutilated rip off of Portrait of a Lady on Fire. Romance is not hot, not touching, nor believable. Dialogue is myopic, literal and uninspiring. Metaphor of digging up fossils --digging up queer stories from history is a weak attempt to simulate the depth of Portrait's ruminations on art making and historical record.

If you like dialogue, this movie isn't for you. Nice story, but it's slooooooooow.

It was horrible and I terribly enjoyed being the sole person in the audiance to laugh. "Call me a portrait of a lady finding fossils" is a rehash of algorithm nonsense, but Golly we'd eat up any lesbian crums off the floor wouldn't we
