An American Pickle

A sometimes humorous story that is half funny and half stupid. Seth Rogen is an offbeat comic and this is an offbeat movie. I liked how they played the rivalry between the two men, one modern and one completely out of step but with determination and a good deal of dumb luck. Until that luck runs out and the world sees him for exactly how out of step he is. The only thing I really disliked was exactly how he got preserved. Worthwhile and occasionally funny.

Half this movie is a great pickle, a nice dill or a half sour. The rest? Those heinous bread and butter ones you get by accident when you forget to read the jar because you’re so excited to get some pickles. This is all premise with nothing supporting it. It not being funny is kinda funny.

I thought this was going to be a documentary on the history of the American Pickle. I even listened to Seth on WTF discuss this film, and I continued to believe this was a documentary.

Though not consistently funny, it is somewhat clever without trying too hard to make any kind of point, and it was worth the watch for me. It's not totally dumb like some of Seth Rogan's movies, but it doesn't take itself too seriously either. He has a decent double performance.

Seth Rogen is good in this movie playing a dual role. The script has plenty of good and funny moments. Overall I would recommend this film.

was fun at first but quickly lost steam in the first act after the prologue.

It knew enough to not cut the balls off of the dramatic parts, specifically at the end. Just let whatever heartfelt and touching moment there is breathe. Aside from that, it was a little weird watching Rogan do the accent, but he carried two different characters so I think he deserves respect. It wasn't as funny as you might think, even if you're a big Rogan fan, but there were a few good laughs scattered throughout. Script flirts with some commentary but doesn't go in deep.

Pretty disappointing fish out of water story, Rogan plays both the comedic relief and the straight man here. It never fully commits to absurdity and because of that the laughs are too sparse to really be enjoyable.

It has some genuine heart and Rogen is impressive here in fully realizing two very different characters. Unfortunately it's just not all that funny. The biggest laughs come from the comedy inherent in recognizing the (surface-level) parallels between a turn-of-the-century working class immigrant and a contemporary hipster.

chill out guys it's a folk tale. also it made me want to take up pickling although I am not sure if that was its intent.

Just enough laughs for a very mild recommendation

A silly premise leads to a scattershot story. The satirical sequences are bizarrely witty, but it just doesn't work as a whole, goes through many unfunny stretches, and suffers from bad tone management and pacing.

Hearing Yiddish in a movie drew out some nice nostalgia vibes from my youth. Alas, two doses of Rogen might be too much for me. His humor is alright, but doesn't leave much space for anything else.

Salty with a tart after-taste.

Could’ve been way more interesting and funnier since Rich was at the helm (disappointed) and Rogen as the double main star. A few chuckles here and there but mostly just hits one not. Tim Robinson killed it with his quick cameo where he basically just does a sketch from his tv show.

trite. something about the setting and tertiary characters makes it feel like it was made in, like, 2012. feels like a fable for children without anything enjoyable for children. that said, it didn't really make me angry at any point, which is more than can be said for most movies made over the last decade or so.

Surprising touching and warm-hearted poem to traditional values in modern times, without falling into heavy political commentary and bipartisanship.

Could’ve been a lot of things a critic of cancel culture, green capitalism and what have you but mostly settles for telling the same sort of joke over and over again. Not bad but I’m also a Seth Rogen mark

A thought provoking folk tale. A few scenes were too long, but the writing is quite strong in this. Be warned, this is a drama, not a comedy, and my rating is based on this genre classification. I you go into it expecting laughs, you will be disappointed.

this is a nice movie

It's sort of disappointing when it doesn't fully embrace its low fantasy potential and just embraces one or two things about capitalism, cancel culture and family bonding -- Yentl scene is pretty cool, though.

Yea.. It takes itself too seriously for such a goofy topic and it shows. There isn't a balanced. It doesn't bore you but you just can't get into it either.. Somewhere in the middle..

Funny film at times. Too much religious pushing to make me enjoy it fully. I dont want to convert mr rogan i just want a funny pickle story.

This was simple and funny (leaning on the cute side). Rogen (two of them) puts aside the stonerisms and goes full Jew.

What a wasted idea. It had the opportunity for a nice movie, but somehow they manage to take out the worst of it!

It has its moments but ultimately it's quite bland. Unless you're a big fan of Seth I would pass on this one.

Not all that funny but very good character studies. Smaller than a usual Rogen vehicle but has a good heart.
