4tunately this has Hurt (whose eyes alone convey a world of subtle emotion) since it provides almost no sense of an inner-life 4 Crisp. Although Crisp does manage 2 connect w/ 2 characters, 4 the most part he remains an unknowable celebrity fount of aphorisms; a gay Yoda on a mountaintop who impresses the hell out of us w/ his running stream of memorable quotes w/out ever letting us really see the man behind the image. But perhaps that story was already told in his show, the Naked Civil Servant?

Exceptional continuation of Crisp's life story (begun in THE NAKED CIVIL SERVANT) provides Hurt with one of his best later year performances, and a screenplay which intelligently and insightfully explores the gay/AIDS scene in America in the 80s and 90s, while also being devilishly funny at times. Benefits from being far more cinematic than the previous film, and taking advantage of the leaps and bounds in TV censorship over 35 years.

It's a shame how repetitively preachy it becomes after cross-walking path a certain point somewhere in the middle, where the novelty wears off. The first half is as crisp as it gets, and has the effect of a great mascara.
