At the risk of sounding pedantic...for an adaptation of Wilde to work at all, Victorian societal strictures must be established for the daring lines to have something to dare to overstep. Parker fatally ignores this--it has as much style as a TV sitcom. So one is left with individual efforts. Simon Russell Beale is a REAL pro from his very first line. Julianne Moore is good. Minnie Driver is better than I expected (the bar was fairly low). Rupert Everett doesn't deliver even one line properly.

Julianne Moore makes this film watchable, when she is absent it becomes dull.

Another darling addition to the Wilde movies! While this isn't as much of a favorite as Earnest, I still love the acting and the story is very interesting as well. Not quite as light-hearted as Earnest, either, but it's still well done and, again, great actors!

Most of the praise for this film deservedly belongs to Wilde. There is an acerbic wit paired with comical misunderstandings that only Wilde manages to employ successfully. Unfortunately this film simplifies (and sterilises) the thematic elements into "lying is bad". Driver is delightful and Everett's smile makes him a natural for the role. A fun romp, albeit a bit shallow.

As a fan of Oscar Wilde is really enjoyed this film. Rupert Everett and Minnie Driver are both excellent in their roles.

Lovely costuming & brisk wit carry this play to the screen quite well. Charming and pleasing albeit somewhat expected.

Tries to be very clever, but to me it felt boring.
