And Now the Screaming Starts!
Set in 1795 England, newlyweds Catherine (Stephanie Beacham) and Charles Fengriffen (Ian Ogilvy) move into the Fengriffen ancestral family mansion. On their wedding night, Catherine is raped by a malevolent spirit and is further plagued by haunting visions of an eyeless woodsman and a murderous disembodied hand. Charles calls for assistance from Dr. Whittle (Patrick Magee) and his colleague Dr. Pope (Peter Cushing), who uses reason and logic to combat what he assumes to be a mental disorder. (Dark Sky Films)

The problem w/ many older period films that primarily hook the viewer w/ a compelling mystery is that the reveal takes too long to show up; fails to live up to the viewer's curiosity; or fails to explain some of the odd occurrences shown earlier. None of that is a problem here & it seems unfair this isn't considered a gothic classic. The title (which suggests something more modern) doesn't help. This also looks great, has good performances & a disturbing ending (w/ an unnecessary religious dig)

Masterfully directed film with a very interesting story with some good scares.

Amicus goes the gothic-horror route. It works well enough, which leads me to think it a shame that Amicus didn't do more horror flicks set in this period (A gothic horror anthology would have been nifty). Very, very slow, but Hammer fans should have no problems with the pacing- other viewers may get fidgety.

Deflates like a balloon. Somehow gets more boring with Peter Cushing shows up; I didn't know that was possible!

An adept Amicus attempt at period horror - it succeeds on its own merits. At all times you know you are in good hands, even when there's a severed hand crawling towards our sacrificial lead. It's directed with enough impact that its Sins of the Father story arc lands... and hurts.

Pretty dull, the scares don't make up for the rest of the film.

Takes too long get going, yet once it does it becomes pretty watchable. Cushing elevates some of the thin material.

I enjoy Amicus's horror anthologies the most, but I have to hand it to them - this one was fairly good.

Campy British period horror that's heaps cute (as cute as a ghost rapist can be) but a bit sluggish and dull in places. However, the hysterical outbursts and the awesome sight of Stephanie Beacham's breasts in tight, unforgiving corsets stays with you.

A strange, off-balance UK folk horror that's honestly pretty engaging for the first 30 minutes or so despite its faults. Sadly, it starts to drag after that & then it just keeps going and going without giving much reason to care. The protagonist becomes a total nonfactor halfway through, the story becomes more & more confusing as it goes, & none of the side characters are interesting enough to carry the plot. It gets points for good atmosphere & a good idea, but the execution is off.
