And Soon the Darkness

It's a travesty that a pair of beautiful and successful young women (who don't speak a lick of Espanol) can't backpack into a backwater Central-American village and have casual sex with a random guy the night before mountain biking "sans map" to an off-limits ghost town despite being told by Karl Urban that his girlfriend was just kidnapped, without being kidnapped by human traffickers led by the local police and watching your friend and Karl Urban get shot by said traffickers. A TRAVESTY.

Absolute tripe. A premise which looks ridiculous after the first 30 seconds is followed up by pathetic writing, horrible directing, boring dialogue, huge swathes of the film where nothing happens and nothing is driving the narrative, while the rest is repetitive chase and action scenes based largely upon the hypothesis that men can run faster but women are better in a fight. Thank God it was brunette hot girl who got kidnapped, because compared to blonde hot girl her acting really sucked bad.

The acting by all is stiff and unconvincing.The plot is bland and boring.The "twist" in this movie could be seen by a blind guy.The cinematography is the only thing that is good about this movie.

How can anyone even begin and try to compare this to Hitchcock? Amber Heard, and well the rest of the cast's bad acting almost make it unbearable... It doesnt make a film suspensefull if you walk around looking in every possible direction all the time! Thought I would never say this, but Karl Urban is the best thing about this one. And that has to say it all...

And Soon the Darkness isn't a terrible thriller, but it's as generic and formulaic as they come, and I can't recommend it for any reason other than to sight-see parts of Argentina or the cast. The thriller aspects don't work, there's no attempt at believable drama, and there's nothing much of value to be had. Even if you're a fan of these actors, they've been in better movies that just might not bore you to tears.

The film's surprising strength is its visuals - its surprising weakness is that it's pretty boring. Very pretty girls in a very pretty place and a director that shows some promise.

We've got an athletic Mandy Lane who drinks, takes sun, bicycles, drives car, runs, swims, shoots and uses knife and cell. Oh, and gets upset. Cheep thrills I must say. I think I slept part of the film.

'Classy & hot' and 'trashy & less' on a biking & bikini vacation gone bad; too little class and too much trash is one failure, also there are not nearly enough trash to make this somewhat enjoyable at all. *Preview*: #12#, exp-2*, popcorn, story, Odette.A/6, R2.

This movie is trashed by critics and I don't understand that at all. Though it was represented to me as a horror, it's much more of a thriller, but was interesting to me.

Little more than an excuse to show pretty girls in danger.

2 points for Karl Urban getting sweaty, and the girls weren't bad to look at either...

I can't in good conscience recommend this--it's just too cheesy and schlocky--but I can say that I'd happily watch Amber and Odette read the phone book together, provided they were still wearing those world class, Hall of Fame bikinis they sport here. The movie's something you've seen plenty of times before--most recently in "Hostel 2," I suppose--but...super hot chicks! Gadzooks hubba hubba homina homina etc.

Stereotypically annoying american tourists are captured and tortured by stereotypical evil foreigners while lazy foreigners lack the JUSTICE to help. Insulting to all involved. especially the viewer.

These twats are clearly too stupid to live. Why, exactly, are we supposed to care what happens to them?

The original And Soon the Darkness is a calm, restrained and compelling thriller that really escalates the tension nicely (and packs a marvellously joyful soundtrack that works well with the on-screen horrors). No classic, but I've watched it a few times over the years, and I'd happily watch it again tomorrow. This US remake, on the other hand, is tedious wank that has no concept of how to heighten dramatic stakes. Avoid.
