A detective fiction mixed with an essay-documentary about Los Angeles, Hollywood and the film industry, Angel City is a satiric comedy with serious intentions. Lead character, Frank Goya (Glaudini) is hired by conglomerate media mogul, Pierce del Rue, to investigate the death of his young wife; Goya traverses Hollywood and finds it is del Rue who did it and is using him as a cover. Not as good as the other Jost's I've seen, but that's because he's not doing what he's good at here

Jost's excursion into political critique is both didactic and unrefined. That's usually a fatal combination. Some aspects, like the somewhat amateurish (charmingly so) poetic monologues, were enjoyable but I really wasn't into the PI narrative except at the beginning with the scene of photographs. Much prefer the work that tends towards character study than this.

Much better than most who try to rip-off Godard.

Very different from any other Jost film that i've seen (and that includes Last Chants for a Slow Dance which was made the same year), this feels almost more similar to what Mark Rappaport was doing around the same time. Unfortunately it isn't nearly as good. Sloppily filmed, amateurishly acted (and often seemingly improvised), with good prescient ideas rendered clumsily, ultimately it suffers from trying to be a Godard film made by someone who isn't as smart or talented.
