|
A fun, well-executed picture that works on a number of levels. For one, it's a good fish out of water comedy, with Muni's gangster inadvertantly being righteous and making the judge even more popular. It's also a bittersweet drama about the redemptive power of love and a better way to live, which never becomes cloying or repetitive. And it's also a fun comedy for the great interplay between Muni and Rains as a duo. I particularly liked the sober ending, making Muni's sacrifice truly heroic.

The moral took over what should have been an awesomely cool dead gangster tale. You had Claude Rains as the devil and "Scarface" Paul Muni as the mobster getting another chance on earth to get his revenge on the crook that killed him. But so much of the middle portion is Muni finding the good life, it sort of ruins the mood. However the start was great and the ending was fine considering the the road they went, so still a likable acquaintance.

Paul Muni plays one of the most mentally-challenged thugs I've ever seen on screen. Claude Rains shows some menace and charm as an excellent Mepapopolis (ha), but who is often inexplicably impotent. There was some humor, and the love story had potential, as did the good vs evil theme, but stupid characters, inconsistent Hollywood theology and a crap ending short-circuit it. Favorite part, though, when Rains' devil rails at God, is somewhat out of place, but profound.

Reminiscent of Here Comes Mr. Jordan, but a little lacking in the charm of that film. But still, an entertaining film with a young Anne Baxter looking gorgeous. In fact, I don't think she ever looked as good again, as she does in this film.

Pretty decent movie that kept my interest throughout as I wanted to kind of see what was going to happen next. Interesting characters and an interesting storyline with decent acting really kept this movie going at a good pace. Even the end kind of surprised me.

Writer Harry Segall tries to conjure up the magic of his "Here Comes Mr. Jordan," but fails. Paul Muni looks weary and uninterested, offering us a pale imitation of his Scarface of fifteen years before. (I mean, how could such an important actor be bothered with such fluff? He who had been Pasteur! And Zola!) Anne Baxter is beautiful, and Claude Rains smoulders and bristles as the Lord of Darkness, but neither of them can save this doomed project. It goes to Hell on a sled.
