Between this and Atomic Blonde and Red Sparrow I feel like there’s this little mini-trend going on of these very tonally similar female spy movies with period piece settings and Russian/Cold War themes and too many twists and double crosses and high sex factor etc. Seriously you could do a marathon of these things at this point. This one does have some fun action but I feel like Anna herself was just too flat a character with motivations that seemed here and there and everywhere.

Perhaps if I had seen the entirety of Nikita, I might be down on this as much as critics seem to be, but I only know the set-up & not the conclusion, so only the first half of this feels familiar & predictable. However, the 2nd half is filled with increasingly compelling & entertaining twists & its easy to see why Besson is the master of the waif-like-model-kicks-ass genre. By the end he's crafted a metaphor for females getting out from under the thumbs of 2 men who aren't overtly horrible dopes

luc besson's "le regard male simulator 2019" is barely passable. it tries to spin the womanizing suave male chauvinist figure on its head, but the problem is, luss never ceases to be an object of desire from besson's point of view. and also, in which parallel universe do the junkies of 1980's russia have laptops? where they apply for military jobs online? seriously, somebody read these scripts before rolling the film.

I really liked this film. It was miles better than Atomic Blonde, which treads much of the same waters as Anna. I liked the actress who played Anna. She did a fine job with the role.

I'm not usually savy to anachronisms, but I had that exact wireless adapter that Anna plugs into a 1990 computer to steal info... Anyway, Besson remakes Nikita, dressing his main actress up in a variety of wigs that look eerily like his ex-wife Jovavich, and whatever thriller is going on, I'm just perplexed why he's holding on so tightly to his past.

ANNA is an imperfect film that doesn't always feel like it knows what it wants to be, but what action sequences it does have are out of this world, and the out-of-sequence storytelling reminds me of a well-crafted Tarantino film.

Its already unsophisticated double-agent plot is made into a laughable mess by unending time-jumps of varying lengths that belabor unnecessary detail into already comprehensible twists. Luss does surprisingly well with the action, Mirren's efforts put limp ham on a chicken bone, Murphy is unintentionally a giant sleaze. Ultimately it's the horrific construction that makes what might otherwise have been a decent popcorn flick into an almost unwatchable affair.

Luc Besson has a habit of making films like this. It's not terrible but it's just not great either. This is a great shame because the cast involved is great but the film probably isn't quite at that level (also perhaps aren't cast correctly) and feels like a by-the-numbers spy movie.

I've liked what I've seen of Besson's stuff (especially "Lucy"), which isn't that much. And this one is no exception--except for 98% of the two major, stupid, action sequences which should have been transferred unceremoniously to an external hard drive, and buried in the LA landfill. Excellent story.

Anna was a rerun of Nikita. Except Anna was nothing like Nikita. The plot was messy and excluding two fighting scenes the movie was waste of time. Sorry Luc. I did not like it. And Sasha Luss was not good in lead.

It really seems like I've seen this movie before. What year does this take place exactly, where there are Windows laptops and cell phones everywhere? Didn't care about any of the characters but some other f the action is ok.

It's unfortunate that Sasha Luss's major acting break is overshadowed by Besson's mess, but I guess there's only so much pity you can give to a supermodel. The constant close-up shots of the actors, both male and female, can be claustrophobic, and feels cheap, as the actors' emoting fails to replace well-written dialogue for the characters.

Another aimless “female Russian agent” movie. Though this is better than Salt and Red Sparrow thanks to untraditional cut with lots of plot twists, beautiful cinematography and some well done stylish action sequences (the restaurant fight is shot in 5 days!)

There are a couple of John Wick-esque action scenes, but mostly this movie is a dramatic spy thriller, and I think they do a pretty good job with it. The twists do feel well thought out, and Anna is a character I think many will relate to. Some may discount Sasha Luss's performance as too monotonic, but I personally think there's a good deal of subtlety in her performance that really drew me in. I enjoyed this more than Atomic Blonde.

Gross. Remember when Besson supposedly stole Kathryn Bigelow's research on Joan of Arc to make The Messenger? Queue Red Sparrow. And could somebody please feed Ms. Luss a couple bagels or something.

Less convoluted than Atomic Blonde & less incompetent than Peppermint, it also features a much more dynamic- if also sometimes unlikeable- heroine than both of those & a fine performance by Sasha Luss to match. The cast is solid all around, with Mirren, Murphy & Evans all shining. Still, though, its story is its ultimate downfall, as there are too many moving parts & several that feel unnecessary, & the whole thing is stretched way too thin. It's not all bad, but it should've been better.

It's a lazy movie, with lazy tricks, with lazy audio. The photography is sometimes good, but more often than not it's just a pile of movie trope from the 90-2000 that I don't wish to see again in a movie.

This one was actually a lot of fun. While a bit dark of a subject matter, it had a nice dose of humour that set it apart from other 1980ies-set spy movies. This said, there were quite a few anachronisms that stood out such as anything to do with computers and some of the cars. Still a very enjoyable movie with a nicely wrapped-up ending.

Works best as a sort of companion piece to De Palma's superior Femme Fatale. Also much better than the dreadful Atomic Blonde. Cillian Murphy makes the most of his part.
